Cripple Fight!

Yesterday afternoon when I heard Krause talking to Yoshi I knew it was time for the annual Krause v. Freakshits confrontation. Every spring this flares up. Krause thinks that Freakshits is spending the book budget too fast. Freakshits insists that it's better to get the money spent so there's none left over at the end of the fiscal year in June.

Krause went to Yoshi and complained behind Freakshits' back that the money was getting spent too fast. Yoshi said we'd discuss it as a team. Krause hung on like a pit bull and wouldn't let Yoshi walk out of his cubicle. See, during Cripple Fight '04 (The Rumble in the Receiving Room) and Cripple Fight '05 (Acquisitions Smackdown) Krause had Clio's support. Krause would go to Clio and get her all worked up with a scare story about how we were going to run out of money. Since Krause is white and Freakshits is (in Clio's opinion) a lazy Mexican, Clio would take Krause's side. We didn't get the money spent and the librarians had to go shopping at Borders to spend $10,000 in two weeks. It just added work for everyone.

Clio's long gone now and Yoshi isn't a panicky idiot like she was. He takes time to understand what exactly is going on and makes wise decisions. In order to get the full picture, and not just Krause's, he brought it up at the morning meeting in an indirect way. Freakshits, who has endured this annual fight each year she's worked here, knew immediately where it was going. I will say that she made a strong case and had some good preemptive comments.

For the first half of the meeting, Krause acted like she wasn't paying attention by playing with her pen cap and spinning her ring on her pen. But face was getting redder and redder and she eventually popped. She countered Freakshits' arguments with the old, "But we've been doing it this way for 30 years!" ploy and followed up with her "But the auditor will know!" line that is supposed to scare people. But since no one in this office has never seen the auditor it didn't really work.

Krause got worked up. Freakshits got worked up. Mouse got pulled into it. Katie jumped in. Lestra stood off to the side taking potshots. I got a free show.

In the end Yoshi decided to reduce the number of new orders, receive and pay for the stuff we've already ordered, and then we'll have a better picture of exactly how much money we have and go from there. Technically, this round was a victory for Freakshits. Krause is appealing to the judges, though. She was seen whispering secretly to Yoshi right after the meeting. Cripple Fight '06, the Book Budget Brawl, is underway!
