I've pretty much been meaning to do this since the episode aired. I'm going to ramble about ponies!
These kind of ponies. Won't find any SeaPonies or any of that stuff here. Specifically, I'm talking about the episode
Show Stoppers I really wouldn't recommend it as a first episode for someone who has never seen any other episode of Friendship is Magic before since it focuses on a sub-cast and comes pretty close to almost being a spinoff on its own. And I'm going to be commenting about the entire episode, so SPOILER WARNING.
That said, it's not like there's any huge overarching plot or anything, so if you just want to see cute pony characters or listen to me ramble about the things I find interesting about this episode, check it out.
I estimate that there are more rump shots in the Cutie Mark Crusader episodes each than there are in all of the other episodes on average. Let's try counting them all. 1.
The same shot. I like Applejack's expression a bit more here. But probably only because I tend to prefer my toony characters with open mouths. AND WOW LOOK AT ALL THAT STUFF IN THE BACKGROUND
OHSHI *CRASHEXPLOSION*
Rump shot 2.
You know, I never noticed Scootaloo was the one who made that map until this particular watching of the episode. Her mapmaking skills are superior to my own.
Episode title and episode writer's name. Just kidding, I actually only took this shot because RUMP SHOT 3. It's not as guilty-feeling when it's one of the normal-ish looking ponies rather than the tiny fillies.BUT THE COUNT MUST CONTINUE.
Does this count as a rump shot? I'm counting it. 4.
Scoots is pretty cool on her scooter thinger-bobber-dodad. Like to see some action now and then.
Slow motion makes everything better! Also, holy crap there's flowers in those bushes.
Rump-shot 5. I GET IT NOW APPLE BLOOM IS GOING TO BE A CARPENTER WHEN SHE GROWS UP wait no just one episode ago they failed at building a table nevermind.
Rump shot 6. Looking at this one, I suppose Scoots usually puts the side thingy of the helmet onto the handlebar to make it stay in place. But you don't see the bottom or backside of the helmet hooking into that other bar. But then you can clearly see the strap that would be used to keep it on her securely. What. That said, I've never noticed that while the episode is playing. It goes by too fast.
7. If it hadn't already been confirmed that all of these episodes were done before the series got web-popular, I'd say that this were being done just to increase the amount of rump in the series. Then again, these are younger characters than we usually follow, so perhaps this is done since there's less reason not to? Anyway, she's cleaning stuff with her tail. That's adorable.
8. Still adorable.
Apple Bloom and Scootaloo's expressions look so darn goofy.
I almost missed this one, actually. 9.
I tend to think of Applejack as the in-show version of Charlotte. I can imagine Char with this face returning home like GREAT F*CKING BALLS OF FIRE KILO WHY'JYA DO THAT IN MY HOME COULDN'T YOU AT LEAST WEAR PANTS
This would make a great desktop wallpaper. Sweetie Belle's just darling.
The ponies are raising pigs. Almost all of the creatures we've seen except for the birds are herbivore, even if they normally would not be. I have seen a comic involving Angel the rabbit depicting one grimdark interpretation of how the carnivores get their real food, buuuut whatever. This show's not meant for that kind of thought.
Does this count as a rump shot? I'm not counting it because PIGS.
I'm sure somewhere out there, someone has a kink for the whole mud thing. I'm just amused that Sweetie Belle manages to stay adorable even when covered in mud and with her hair all frazzled.
CMC is grouped up because they're trying to discover their cutie marks. Cutie marks appear on a pony's flank once they've discovered their calling in life, more or less. So there tends to be frequent closeup shots of their flanks. When I first considered writing this up, I was going to include those shots in the count, but realizing that flank and rump technically isn't the same part of the body and that technically most side-shots (most common view) would count as a flank shot, I think it's redundant.
Sweetie being adorable. WHY ARE YOU SNIFFING LEGO BLOCKS I'M FAIRLY SURE THEY DON'T SMELL VERY GOOD.
Oh, it's candy. That's why they're at the Sugarcube Corner. Scoot's face here is just so silly.
For some reason, when they get stuck in the taffy machine, I think of the ghosts from Pac-Man.
I know there's a kink for this. I can't speak for them, but I know I find this set kinda cute because of the color contrast between the taffy and their own brightly colored bodies.
Stickystuck stickystuck. I never really paid much attention to the fact that Sugarcube Corner is decorated to look like an edible house. I've never really seen a candy store like that before. I'd like to.
Closeups. I took one for each of these. Partially because I still enjoy the color contrast, and more because I figured someone will love it. Though it probably looks better in 1080i in the video link.
Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle are stuck together!
It looks less like taffy in this shot and almost like Sweetie's wearing red boots or something. Now I kinda want to see that.
Rump # 10 on some background pony who's fan-name I'm not going to try to remember.
It's pretty much the same shot, but this pony wasn't in it initially. Does it count as a separate shot, or one? I'm counting it. 11.
12 for PoV shift. Hey wait a minute, is that Trixie on that poster? Do you think Photo Finish bumped into her at some point? The colors aren't quite the same, though, and I doubt she'd go without her hat.
This isn't your average darkness. This is. Advanced darkness.
HOW DO I MATCHED CARDS
Scoot's hair looks reaaaaally nice like that. I love it.
It flows so much better than it usually does.
AND. THEY. DIED.
Apple Bloom more or less has her butt pressed up to Scoot's face, but Scootaloo doesn't seem to mind. Also, ADORABLE.
SHOO BE DOO. SHOO SHOO BE DOO.Proof that they can do really nice underwater scenes if they want to. They just didn't need to, I suppose. Plenty of friendship to be had on land. Scootaloo has awesome taste in swimwear. HEY WAIT A SECOND HOW CAN THEY BREATH UNDERWATER WITH THOSE SNORKELS!?
12. Counting it for Twilight Sparkle over there.
If I were counting the number of rumps rather than the normal of shots of it, this would add another for Cheerilee.
This poster kinda weirds me out because I'm so darn sure I've seen one JUST LIKE IT (but in English) my last year of High School.
This looks very odd. Are they "sitting"? Anyway, 13. Made much weirder by the fact that Apple Bloom seems to be aware that I'm looking at their butts to count them. That said, they're all still adorable in this shot. Very nice colors to look at, and the different stages of eye-openness is interesting. Also, shouldn't that bit of hair be BEHIND her ear, tied behind the bow?
Who the heck is Mr. Breezy, and why does Scoots know him? Pretty sure this isn't a DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS episode.
This time her helmet is floating in midair. There's no back-strap to it, and the handle it hung on last time is simply gone altogether. To make up for it, someone has buckets of paint and was clearly painting up their home lately.
Spike's speech in this episode is simple out of sync with how he's been in all the other episodes. This bugs me significantly because he's actually one of my favorite characters. He sounds uncharacteristically stuck-up and snobby.
I just thought the way Apple Bloom is standing looked kinda cool. It's much more interesting in motion. In this particular paused fram, you can see where the leg is an overlapped piece rather than a part of the main body. It's jarring.
Dacing? I FREAKING LOVE KUNG FU AND MIXED MARTIAL ARTS AND THAT'S KINDA LIKE DANCING RIGHT?
If this were a show of humans, Apple Bloom would probably be wearing overalls or something. I don't see this working very well with a dress. Though I figure MOST of the Apple family probably prefers overalls.
I bet one of these would make a decent wallpaper at the right size.
More of this goofy standing pose. Yet I find it adorable and hug-tastic.
RUMP #14. Also, the realization that I tend to forget Apple Bloom wears a bow.
AWWWW APPLE BLOOM WHY ARE YOU SO CUTE allfalldown.
Rump 15. Hey, we can actually sorta look inside the sheet on the piano from here. Nice.
This was the first time I never noticed any of the ponies "sitting" while watching. I immediately though then SO THAT'S WHY THEY DON'T DRAW THEM SITTING.
"WALK THE WALK. TALK THE TALK. EAT THE FOOD... LIKE A... celery stalk?"
For some reason, Scoots at a piano reminds me a lot of Linus from Peanuts. Or one of those kids. I can't remember them all very well anymore. Anyway CONTACT STARS IN ANIMATION WHY DO I LOVE THAT EFFECT SO MUCH I DON'T UNDERSTAND.
"With our cutie-marks, we'll rock Equestria. We use our stomaches to digestia?"
If I were into shipping, I'd say Scoots has her eye on Sweetie. But really, I took this cap because I think it's adorable how she writes like that.
Cute. She's imitating her big-sister Rarity. Well, not really imitating. She learned from her, though, at least.
ONE. TWO. ZEVEN. T-THIRTYTEEN FOUR! GOOD!
Adora-bloom is adorable.
"Ya know ponies only have four legs?"
WHY DON'T YOU USE THAT THING oh that's what that's for
AND WASH YOUR BRUSHES oh i wondered why all the colors looked like mud YOU DON'T USE POWER TOOLS DO YOU
I'm not counting this one because of TAIL. Though I still think it technically is a rump shot.
16. Nearly missed it.
17. HEY IT'S DITZYDOO/DERPYHOOVES/BUBBLES/BUBBLEBEAM. AND THE TIME LORD
This is exactly why I decided to count by shots instead of individual rumps. ALSO IS THAT A WEATHERVANE I SEE I HAVEN'T SEEN WEATHERVANES IN YEARS.
This is all one big panning shot. And wow are there a lot of duplicate ponies. I'm not even sure why, when they have enough designs they've showed off that they could have a bunch of unique ones. I guess for color harmony? The BG ponies do kinda match up OK with the dusk sky.
Probably my favorite minor characters in the entire show. Snips and Snails. I really think that when they were made, thoughts of Pinky and the Brain must have been dancing in their heads.
And Snails kinda reminds me of Kilo in a ton of ways anyway, so I friggin' adore the guy for that. Have a cute shot of him eating. And his Snails cutie-mark.
18. Can't go wrong with a little more Cheerilee, right? I think she could fare well in an episode focusing on her, but I don't think that's going to happen.
Middle of the audience, mid-left and mid-right. 19. I almost missed this one too.
Twilight's "Oh?" expression is great.
"Break a leg!"
"OOF!"
"... Good luck!"
One way or another, Twilight jinxed it.
I wanted a shot of her still down like that but with her eyes open. It looks so weird, but so cute.
"LOOK HERE. AT THREE LITTLE PONIES."
DO YOU SEE WHO I SEE!?
I THINK YOU DO.
Apple Bloom doing her hip-wiggly dance thing. I don't get it, but it's cute.
More dancing from Apple Bloom. I'd rather have a gif of her doing those dances here, but I've already got enough images here without gifs.
"Fight the fight!"
THE DANGERS OF SUPER-JUMPING: You may collide with allies.
Sweetie got bonked straight on out of the frame. Wow. That must have hurt.
OHSHI SPOTLIGHT WHAT DO I DO NOW!? I KNOW! FIGHT THE *SMASH stuck in cutout ow*
Seriously Sweetie Belle what the heck are you doing I'm standing RIGHT HERE the spotlight is like A FOOT AWAY SWEETIEBELLEI'MRIGHTHEREAFOOTAWAYFROMTHE okay I'll just walk into the blue light then.
Mr. Breezy sure has a powerful fan. This is a pretty epic shot, I think.
Weren't those backgrounds about 20% more brown last time we saw them? And does this count as a rump shot? She's wearing clothes this time... I guess I won't count it.
This expression looks so weird in-context. Out of context, it looks like... not Sweetie Belle.
THE POWER OF ROCK MEANS I MUST SAVE EVERYONE FROM BEING CRUSHED BY A HOUSE AND A TREE.
Geez, that's a sick kick right there, Apple Bloom.
Sweetie lost her grip.
BOOM.
And. They. DIED.
Oh, I guess they didn't die. Rump 18, then.
I wouldn't mind a ride on her back if she'd have me. She'd probably teach me about riding while at it. Or just deny it outright as a matter of respect. Anyway. CUTE.
Twist, Silver Spoon, and Diamond Tiara are the only characters to not even have their talent-show performance hinted at. I'm not sure if it was cut for time, or if they had no intention of showing it. Really, I think this segment is where the episode falls apart the most.
Clever. I do recall a similar kind of method used for performing musicians to applaud other performers without causing too much visual/audio noise. Foot shuffling, or something to that effect. Nice to see something like that here.
Snips, you're looking pretty spiffy today. And Spike continues to seem unusually out of place and out of character. He's Twilight's pal. Whatever his relation to Cheerilee is, it hasn't been addressed yet. I don't THINK. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm quite curious.
Pony stripping. PONY STRIPPING YAY THAT'S SO MUCH BETTER THAN BEING NUDE ALL THE TIME wait a second these fillies are younger than the usual OH NOES
CLOTHES COMES OFF. What's a Ziggy?
I hope they bring back this outfit. I think it looks pretty awesome, myself.
If there is a cameraman, I'm sure they have just been hit in the face with those.
Is this 19? I lost count. Sweetie seems really happy about showing off or something. Meanwhile the legs on Scoots and Apple Bloom just look BORK'D
Goofy Twilight is a lot more entertaining to me than the normal studious Twilight. But I think it only works so well for me because the contrast exists.
Applejack is Apple Bloom's sister. Rarity is Sweetie Belle's sister. But Lauren confirmed that Rainbow Dash isn't Scoot's sister. So I figure for her to be showing up here likely means some kind of other relation like niece/cousin. One fan interpretation is that Dash is kinda like Scoot's hero, and that's why she acts so much like her, but that wouldn't explain her showing up as if to pick her up in this scene. Unless she's there more to show support for her than to take her home. THIS IS NEVER RESOLVED SOMEONE FIND AN ANSWER FOR ME.
From what I've read, storyboard artists have a huge hand in how the final scenes look. Sounds kinda awesome.
Directors do something important, too. I think. And the location designer deserves some props.
What's a top draw? Can I eat it? Anywho, I figure animation directors are important too.
IT'S A PRODUCER. But I actually don't really know what they do.
Anyway. 19 shots showing off the rear of the ponies in the show. I DARE THE INTERNET TO FIND ME AN EPISODE THAT HAS MORE THAN THAT.
