jesus on mars

Started 2009 surrounded by naked ladies. That's not a horrible way to do it, right? The plan kept evolving as people kept canceling and so on. In the end Jessie and I went to Dragon Fish, then to Union Jack's, then back to my place after midnight for board games and drunken sleeping. Got up late, hungover of course, and went to lunch at the Cadillac. Took Jessie back to her car downtown. Wandered over to Powell's. Bought a couple of Philip Jose Farmer books, inspired by reading this feature at the A.V. Club. Then I saw The Spirit. Then raced across town to celebrate Russ's 30th birthday with Debi, Jon, Jess, Andy, Amy, and some friends. Awesome to see them.

This is the first time I am sitting down at my computer since the new year.

The Spirit was stunningly fun. It's hard to call it a straight-up "good" film, but every scene was amazing. It felt like the guys who made... I don't know, maybe Evil Dead 2... were give a huge budget and told, "make a movie that's half superhero, half film noir, all style, no substance, and go." (And I don't think the Spider-Man series feels like that very much.) I expected to hate it. I laughed a lot. And it's gorgeous.

I work tomorrow at 10, so I need to hit the sack, or else I'd expound more on the fun of seeing Russ and Debi, or what my New Year's Eve was like, or why The Spirit is worth seeing after all. I like to open the new year a little more reflectively, and since I can now reopen Open and since I really feel lately like (re-)addressing my future, I probably have something to say, but alas.

So it goes. Good night.
