Regarding
the Elbow song, Pitchfork
seems to disagree. It's a tragic drinking song where the protagonist loses himself in "a hole in my neighborhood down which of late I cannot help but fall." Less fancy-pants lyricists would have just said "bar," but [Guy] Garvey knows the value of a poetic line or two.
Not like I really believed he meant the bottom of a well, anyway.

In my heart, the song will always be referencing the
Wind-Up Bird, just as Nine Inch Nails's "The Becoming" will always be, to me,
a song about Darth Vader.

Even in 1995, I secretly believed "Annie" meant "Anakin."
