Jon has a DVD player built into his megastack, and a monitor sitting next to his machine. Why it never occurred to me to put on one of the eighty bajillion movies I have sitting around unwatched while rendering and "shaking" my projects on his machine I don't know.
Tonight I watched Mystery Train, one of many "assigned" viewings and readings from Enie and by proxy Bushra, re: my final project, which I am officially supposed to be preproducing, planning, and "writing" (though I'm going to work initially without a script, part of the challenge). The "three rooms" paradigm/structure survives another bout with the advisors and this time, more or less officially, becomes the project. Now to come up with a story. Then to gather my ensemble of improv'ers. Then, magic.
I "shook" the flickers out of more Amnesia Hotel tonight. I did the Scrabble scene, but about a third of it needs tweaking, which is frustrating. And one of the kitchen shots (a scene I was positive would be the easiest of all) is proving problematic as well. Including the last in-bed shot, which I haven't tried yet but know will be tricky, that makes four total problem shots--not including Scrabble. Hmm. Tick tock, tick tock.
Elsewhere, in the land where PIFF trailers are talked about but not actually made, frustration reigns supreme. At this point my money is on it not happening (or, and I don't like the prospects of this, but the other likely outcome is: it happens without me). This just because every time we meet to "move forward," we are delayed, the meeting is cancelled, and/or a new meeting has to be scheduled. It's like talking to an addict or something; every time we are told, "Next time for sure, one more meeting and we'll start." Number of meaningful steps taken forward: one.
Number of steps between us and finishing this project: writing + green light + casting + locations + gear + crew + rehearsals + scheduling + shooting + editing + sound + post + printing to video + distributing = fourteen.
I started Cassavetes's A Woman Under the Influence, another "assigned" viewing for my project (Cassavetes comes up every time I pitch my idea), but it's 3:24am and I think tonight I'll go lay down next to my girlfriend for more than twenty minutes. Imagine--we could sleep at the same time for a whole two hours if I leave now.
See ya.
