Night had fallen fast. She still walked around. The process itself lost meaning. She was just looking at the tall buildings that seemed to eat her up. Besides, they were all just shadows now. Hobos sat against brick walls, defeated and distant from what we call the world. She had wondered back to her own block, climbing the stairs slowly. She was exhausted.
Did they find a home?
No, they didn't. She felt defeated. She made sure the number was the one thing she could look forward to. Maybe he would need help with his groceries again. Maybe even another time after that. Maybe forever.
Forever.
She stirred her cold soup with disgust. She wasn't hungry. She felt like running wild again, despite the dangers of night in a big city. She just wanted to go wild. Perhaps go wild with Mark.
Her hand slammed the table as she made herself jump. What was she saying? She cursed herself inside. But hey, it was change. It was a new person in a new city with new stars and a new moon and new statues and new shadows. She could be whoever she wanted here. Her parents didn't even talk at the table. They both seemed distant and uninterested in each other. It was enough to make you think twice about falling in love.
That's the thing. You fall in love with someone and you promise them you will never be like those who have failed. Maybe you won't, but will you get bored? Will the years wear down on your bones, if not your heart? She could imagine Mark staring at her with absolutely no interest. What was she saying?
Mark sat up in bed for over an hour thinking about her. Her eyes so slender, her skin almost impossible to touch. Her image seemed so far away. But she wasn't too far away. She just had to cross over a couple streets and fall into his arms. What was he saying?
Will the years wear down our bones, if not our hearts?
