A tiny White Collar scene. Because everyone should write fic when there's only one episode of a show out. *headdesk*
"I had to, Peter, he'd have gotten on that plane and we'd never have seen him again!" Neal is giving him the puppy-dog-face, although he really should have figured out by now that it doesn't work on Peter.
Peter sighs, rubbing his eyes. "You stay out of trouble for an entire week, and the minute I get back--" He looks up, his eyes narrowing. "You knew about the operation since Tuesday. Why'd you wait until now to pull this?"
Neal shrugs, radiating innocence. "I knew they'd call you. I didn't want to ruin your vacation with Elizabeth. You're very lucky to have her, you know."
"You're not allowed to talk about my wife," Peter snaps. He is lucky, he knows that. Elizabeth is way out of his league. He doesn't need reminding of that by America's Next Top Criminal Model.
"That's not fair." Neal pouts. "I bet you talk to her about me."
For three straight years once, Peter doesn't say, because Neal really doesn't need to know that. Doesn't need to know that Peter's marriage had nearly broken up over his obsession.
"Really. Why'd you wait?" he says instead. "You were right, any later and we'd have lost him."
Neal glances up, his face serious for once. "I told you. I didn't want to ruin your vacation."
Peter knows Neal Caffrey, knows him better than anyone. He's a con artist. He can't be trusted. But there are times when Peter really wants to believe him.
And I'm counting down to the appearance of the first Jack Harkness/Neal Caffrey fic. Hot con men in three...two...
