PSA: Life on Mars (UK) is a SRS POLICE DRAMA. There is no room in it for slashy undertones.
Gene and Sam agree. (Many many thanks for
wyvernwolf for that photo. Anybody got anymore like it? *looks around hopefully* My gosh, look at the size of those hands. *stares some more*)

I am now up to 2.5. 2.2 was a very good episode in many respects (oh, Gene!) but I was too busy cringing every time Glen Fletcher showed up onscreen doing his Uncle Tom act to really appreciate it. Maybe upon re-watch, now that I know what to expect, I'll be able to get more into it.
2.1 continues to be my benchmark for this season. I've already rambled on at truly excessive length about that one, I know, but here's another thing I noticed.
The turning point in the conversation with Crane, at the end, is when Gene says, very carefully, "So...my DI told you all this?" He puts emphasis on those words, "my DI".
I think if he'd said "DI Tyler", or even "Sam", it wouldn't have had the same effect. Sam was ready to give up and admit everything, even though he knew how it would end up for him. Gene was reminding him of his place in this world, of where he fits in here. He has a specific role, he just needs to remember it.

Not enough DCI Bell. Grr. The short scene with him and Della was cute, though. "We can't just bring him in! We have to have a reason before taking aggressive action." BWAH. How funny were those words, coming out of that mouth?
I think that, given the tiniest bit of encouragement, I could be a Bell/Della shipper. "Bella"? Blargh.
On the other hand, entirely too much of Anne. I don't like Anne. Mainly because I don't think that seducing your husband's best friend, just to get back at him for his affair, is any sort of way to behave. Even if you don't care about your husband any more (which is understandable) or yourself, it's not fair to the best friend.
And Cal, I just don't think she's that into you. The scene where Cal's offering to move to Manchester is just painful, because obviously Anne doesn't want that, doesn't want him interfering with her perfect life and her perfect children, doesn't want to have to explain to anyone who this scruffy journalist is.
And then she takes off with a briefcase that she doesn't want Cal poking around in. She has stolen his notes, hasn't she? I don't know if she thinks that Cal has info about Stephen that he won't use, being his friend and all, and she wants it all exposed because she hates Stephen so much; or if she's still in love with Stephen and wants to make sure Cal can't use the info against him. I don't know what she's up to. But I don't like her, and I don't trust her. Although I do feel sorry for her that she wound up with a lying scumbag like Stephen. That was not her fault.
Speaking of the lying scumbag--Cal leaves a naked woman alone in bed to go hang out in the freezing cold with the homeless people, just so he can meet up with Stephen. Who has every reason to hate his guts. Mmm-hmm. Admit it, Cal, you're sleeping with Anne because she's the closest you can get to actually sleeping with Stephen.
Of course, it goes both ways. Stephen does have every reason to hate Cal, but he tells Bill Nighy he doesn't want him fired, and when he finds out he might have been set up, it's Cal he calls. Knowing that Cal's in bed with his wife. "Put some clothes on."
And what is it with Cal, that he surrounds himself with people that he's way too good for? And no, he is not blameless re Anne, but he did try to resist. Okay, not very hard. That's Cal--he is weak. (Note him telling Bill Nighy "I can't stop." Man up, Cal!) But I don't think it would have happened if she hadn't offered.
These characters are complex and not always logical, and that's what I love about them, even though it makes me want to smack all of them. (Side note--did anybody watch the US movie? How badly did they butcher it up? Did they even try to get in any character development in an hour and a half, or was it mostly just blowing stuff up, as it looked on the previews?)
Um, what else. Oooh, Dominic. Dominic looked mighty fine in his eggplant-colored shirt, even though Marc Warren has never done anything for me before. And ha, Sid thought so too! Have we seen Sid before this? Who is he? Is he just some random bloke who thought it'd be a good idea to shag a suspect? Very professional there, boys. I love the scene where he's describing what happened to a very attentive audience. Della in particular is really getting into it. Della writes slash on the internet, you know she does. Poor straight-laced DCI Bell, imagine what'll happen when he finds out.
Dan continues to be adorable. He's the killer, isn't he? He set it all up so he could get an enormous story and impress his dad. There, I have solved the case.
Well, that's my fandom round-up for the time being. How are y'all?
