Gene is not the same Gene, and you will either love him for it (hello, "Galex" fans) or...you won't. I don't hate him in A2A but to me he is a shadow character of who he was in LoM.
Keely Hawes is actually really good in the series, it is the writing of her character that makes me cringe. I admit that by the last four episodes, I was at the "get better or I'm dropping out" stage and Lo! It got better!
I enjoyed it overall, but as far as quality goes, it is 1/3 of what LoM was. And a lot of that falls back on what they did with Gene. Alex Drake got on my nerves sometimes, and I loved her sometimes, and that character took a huge brundt of the fan-hate for the show, but I think she was just an easy target.
There is much back and forth on whether A2A is canon to LoM -- there is a good argument that it isn't. I can't go into WHY without doing the whole spoilery thing for LoM. But I'll say that the reason it isn't to ME is because Gene is so fundamentally different.
SO: Should you watch A2A? Only if you are prepared to take it as a completely separate show, which incidentally has "a" Gene Hunt who bears some resemblance to "the" Gene Hunt of LoM. If you are looking for a legit sequel to LoM, though, you will HATE it.
