I really need to be working on my projects and not doing this. I really need to be doing my take-home exam and not doing this. I need to finish the two projects and the exam so I can PACK, and not do this.
That said,
Tami is my hero. On another note, the next one will be Illea instead of Asa, because I am allowed to change my mind.
Name: Rose
Currently Appearing: A Story, Chapter Two (sort of, and again, title subject to change), random ficlets, and brief background appearance in the "am I nuts?" fanfic.
Orientation: Homosexual.
Origin: Rose reeks of Slayers, reeks of it so strongly she can clear the room, and it is going to become apparent right now why; she is a chimera, a creature made by magic. Her creator, the sorceress Jasmine, made living things. It was her hobby; when conflict broke all over the world, she began making creatures with a purpose, and began making creatures as weapons. Rose is this last; she has six older "siblings" who were her prototypes, of sorts. They are golem, blue demon, and Morningstar Elf, the three she was closest to were Iris, Crocus, and Dogwood (male, male, female). She is one of six who are human, golem, and blue demon. Of these, her closer siblings, she is close only to Lilac, the only one of twelve who chose not to follow her designed purpose- an assassin and sort of special-forces combat tool.
Significant Other(s): Shonsea t'il Varn, only and always.
Quirks: Rose... well, for an assassin she's got some quirks. First of all, she keeps herself polished to a mirror finish. No, highly reflective surfaces don't give away your position! Not at all!
Like most human beings, Rose doesn't clean. Not really. This is fine; Shonsea does. Rose cooks, and she's good at it. She plays the guitar, and she's got a talent for chiropractics, of all things. If she lived in this modern world she'd be a huge fan of everything related to rock- hard, indie, alternative, metal... yeah. She's got a natural but mostly undeveloped talent for melody; she didn't pick up the guitar until some time after being reunited with Shonsea. She's quiet, stoic, but has a very well-developed and somewhat wry and dry sense of humor. Rose has ALWAYS been about as talkative as... well, a rock. This is Heero Yuy without the computer and much more likely to smile, laugh, and put shaving cream in your shoes. She and Daemon antagonize each other, and did so before they ever actually met.
She also picks the olives off of everything and eats them separate. Finally, Rose drinks coffee like it's going out of style. Her system craves the caffeine.
Background: Designed and trained to be an assassin, the National Defense Department would adore having Rose and her siblings as their own personal swiss-army-knife of combat. She loved and served her Lady Jasmine, but eventually noticed something... different about one of the camp followers. The woman with Ocotillo, that good natured braggart of a kitsune... something about her wasn't right. Trained to notice things, it bugged her because she couldn't figure out what it was. Shonsea wasn't dangerous, wasn't a spy, wasn't hiding anything; THOSE would have been easy to figure out. She was exactly what she appeared to be, and yet she was something else. Being Rose, of course this meant it made perfect sense to watch the woman and essentially become a stalker in her free time (which would have creeped the HELL out of Shonsea and sent her into panic, had she ever known about it). By the time Ocotillo kicked the bucket, Rose knew enough about Shonsea to know that she would like to officially get to know her, and to know that she'd be lost. And so Rose acquired Shonsea as her shadow, and because Rose is Rose, Shonsea was faced with something she hadn't had to deal with since she was sixteen; routinely unusual situations. Eight years later, when Shonsea switched bodies with an infant Keh'leren, Rose took care of her. It takes a really good friend to wake up every three hours to feed you, to take the time to teach you how to hunt, and to not laugh at you when you're learning to fly.
After Jasmine was sealed in crystal, Rose met with a mishap of her own. She was cursed to a nightmare-filled sleep from which she should never awaken. Shonsea put her away somewhere safe, and then set off on her own adventures to free her. Meanwhile, back at the cave, Rose soaked in all the terror, anger, and horror her own imagination could throw at her. The human brain (and Rose has what is essentially a human brain) in REM sleep comes up with a new dream about every fifteen seconds. It only seems longer because there is no relative perspective to compare it to. Rose was in constant REM, with only nightmares, for fifty years straight. Anything resembling fortitude or willpower vanished after maybe an hour. By the end of fifty years, she had no mind, no voice, no memory, no sanity, no nothing. She had been stripped bare of everything except the very core of herself.
Rose's sleep was dreamless for four-hundred-fifty more years. During that time Shonsea lived her life, raised her children, and ran her shop- but she also took care of Rose, still hidden away where Shonsea had put her, and she searched for the way to awaken her.
Shonsea did eventually succeed; not a magician herself, she had learned enough about magic in the four centuries (the first century of Rose's sleep being taken by selling herself into fifty years of slavery to a demon and fifty years of being put back together by Daemon) of research to figure out what to do. That, and a long string of collaborations with human mages. Rose woke, and she woke holding on to her last memory; that of nightmares. She knew Shonsea, but not in the way one would think. She knew her, but not her name, or who she was. Just knew her, and loved her, and needed her, and she certainly knew that either Shonsea had left her over and over in her nightmares or that terrible things had happened to her that Rose couldn't stop.
In the ensuing chaos the four humans who came with Shonsea to wake Rose were killed by Rose herself as she flung destructive magic in her rage and fear. Shonsea knew Rose could never hurt her with the certainty of a tiny child believing that mommy knows everything; she was correct, but the two humans who didn't believe her weren't, and likewise met their ends trying to protect Shonsea from Rose as Rose tried to eliminate everything but Shonsea and herself.
Shonsea again took Rose away, out into the middle of the desert and stayed there, alone with her, until Rose was sane enough and secure enough to not repeat the events of her awakening. By the time Shonsea and Rose returned to Shonsea's home in the city, more than a year later, Rose could handle being in a crowd, but refused to physically let go of Shonsea outside of the house, and never let her out of her sight. She also didn't sleep. Due to Shonsea's peculiar relation to the entire city by the time Shonsea actually made it back everybody knew not to touch the strange shiny lady or Miss Shonsea, never to raise his or her voice to Miss Shonsea, and, when Rose let go of Shonsea, never ever to walk between Miss Shonsea and her friend, because breaking Rose's line-of-sight to Shonsea was a Bad Thing.
Rose eventually healed as well as she was ever going to; she'll let Shonsea out of her sight, even in crowds, and not be anxious about it. She doesn't, however, ever let Shonsea out of her earshot. She does sleep, and she'll even sleep while Shonsea's sleeping, though for many, many years she'd only sleep while her lover stayed awake.
A little over one hundred years after her awakening, Shonsea became pregnant at Rose's request; the resulting twin boys were Khesea and Shontal, and they were... busy. They also didn't move out until Shonsea (Mama) stopped doing their laundry, which was when they were two hundred years old. Rose (Mom) had been charging them rent for maybe eighty years by that point.
Employment: Rose spent her early years, from her "birth" (fully-grown women aren't really born, they just kinda happen) until her sleep, as a highly skilled assassin and general mess-cleaner. Even though she's drastically out of practice, Rose can still probably kill you with her left big toe and a paper clip; two fingers and a twist tie isn't even worth asking about. After sleep, she spent some time studying chiropractics, decided she could be happy with a nine-to-five if her security-Shonsea was the secretary, gave it up, learned the guitar, spent some time busking, and then settled down to be the lesbian equivalent of a house-husband. It is Rose who reaches the top shelf, changes light bulbs, fixes the plumbing, takes out the trash, and opens pickle jars.
Appearance: Rose is five-eight and built like a very athletic, toned twentysomething who lifts weights twice a week. She does not have the basketball boobs of doom, and her curves are more subtle than Keh'leren!Shonsea's, though they were a lot less subtle than human!Shonsea's. Her hair is a dusty, dusky purple, tinged with copper, in a pixie cut. While it isn't exactly wire, since it doesn't stress and kink and break the way wire would, it sure behaves like wire. Lots of fine wire and boy does it look funny first thing in the morning. Her ears are pointed, and not nearly so long in relation to her head as a Keh'leren or her elf-golem-demon chimerae siblings. Her skin is stone; granite, to be specific, primarily of K-feldspar and rose quartz, so she's not blue like Zelgadis. She's grayish PINK, and polishes herself, so she's also SHINY. Thin brows, short eyelashes, and her eyes glow very, very faintly. They're also brilliant, burning volcano-orange, with round pupils. (Her elf-mix siblings had vertical slit pupils and hair in the yellow and orange range and were about a foot taller on average. The human-mix siblings had hair in the violet and blue range and shorter ears. All twelve had the same volcano-orange eyes and light muscular, athletic build.)
Distinguishing Characteristics: Rose is one-third Blue Demon, the color demon of sound and speed. She's stronger than humans, stronger than Keh'leren, moves in absolute silence, is able to sprint at almost the speed of sound (as in, SHORT DISTANCES), and generally move really fast. Aside from her looks, however, Rose's most distinguishing characteristic is her hearing. If she concentrates, she can hear three miles away out of doors on a calm day. She can certainly hear everything that goes on in the neighbors' house- and the neighbors' two houses over. This is why Shonsea never being out of earshot is not actually that much of a restriction.
She also has been using reading glasses for the past seventy-five years.
If You Could Pick a Theme Song for This Character, It Would Be: Serenity, Godsmack.
Sin-of-Anger: Maybe. She's protective, and sullen sometimes, and Daemon pushes all her buttons in all the wrong ways and they usually end up fighting either verbally or physically... okay yes. And if she's upset with you she'll sulk for a while before getting even.
Sin-of-Envy: Rose is possessive of her Shonsea, and actually always was. The only reason why she's not overtly jealous is because she's got concrete proof that nothing could take her lover away, and she trusts Shonsea herself. Still, she gets disgruntled when other people hit on her beloved, put out if she's ignored for long, and has never learned to share Shonsa with Daemon. Shonsea is her Precioussss.
Sin-of-Pride: Vanity? Yes. There is nothing else that could persuade an assassin to make herself SHINY, and keeping a mirror finish on stone that gets wear takes work. The soles of her feet and palms of her hands never keep a perfect shine, and Rose doesn't even try. When her shininess was a liability, Rose dressed like NINJA, with everything covered. Now, in the hot, dry town she lives in with Shonsea? Rose wanders around in a tank top and daisy dukes most of the time; stone never sunburns, and shiny Rose BLINDS innocent bystanders with stray flashes of reflective light. Rose gets perverse amusement and satisfaction out of this.
Sin-of-Gluttony: COFFEE.
Sin-of-Lust: Not really; she's more concerned with the satisfaction of pleasing her lover than the sex itself, but then, that can't be totally true, or Rose wouldn't get that smirk on her face when Shonsea goes into heat. Still, given the choice between all the cuddling she wants and no more sex, or all the sex she wants and no more cuddling, Rose would choose to cuddle.
Sin-of-Avarice: Nah.
Sin-of-Sloth: Nah.
Virtues: She knows what is needed of her and does it, without complaint or even thought. Duty and loyalty are important to her, and even though she loves Shonsea more than her life, though Shonsea is her anchor and her sanity, if her Lady Jasmine were to suddenly be free of her crystal (impossible, but we won't go there) and order her to a task, she would do it. She's mostly calm, easygoing, and forgiving, a watcher of the world more than a direct participant most of the time. She has a sense of humor, she listens, and she never, ever gives unsolicited advice.
She notices everything.
She would get along splendidly with Sharkchan!Serge, and Real!Serge wouldn't pluss her in the least. Rose was almost totally unflappable, and is almost totally unflappable again. She ignores who and what she doesn't choose to concern herself with, deals with what she can't ignore quickly, and really lives in a very small world. She never procrastinates, which I personally find disgusting. I also find Shonsea's habit of constantly rising just before DAWN disgusting, but we won't go there.
This done, and shower done.... AAAAUUGH. I really, really don't want to get to work, but OH WELL LIFE SUCKS LIKE THAT.
