YOU WOULD THINK, that after all this time, I would know better. I would learn.
You'd think.
Penny Arcade had it right, in their strips on Pokemon. I think, with very, very little effort, I could
be Gabe.
I've been playing the Pokemon video games since they VERY VERY first came out. I played Red so constantly that I played it through the entire first semester of high school chemistry (and got my lab partner to play it second semester). I nearly failed the class, but I did not care! POKEMON. I beat Red TWICE, and caught all of the original 151. The only one I used a glitch for was Mew.
Because the pokemon games are PORTABLE, I could play them while I peed. That is how huge a dork I am.
My brother would buy the Players' Guides, because he likes to burn through games, and I would read the Guide cover to freaking cover, memorize it, refer to the tables... and plot out my pokemon and their knowledge as carefully as... anything done really carefully that takes an absurd number of hours, reaching into the triple digits. I cleaned two years ago and found a spiral notebook from that era, FULL of my notes on primary-team combinations and move quartets, and this is for YELLOW, a game that, compared to the latest and greatest in the Pokemon franchise, is not that complicated.
Huge freaking dork.
Now, I am also a cheap dork- I have not played Crystal or anything after it (generation III and IV games, for you in the know)... partly because by the time Crystal came out I was burned out on Pokemon. Partly because I am cheap. And when Ruby and Emerald came out, I was still cheap, and also hadn't bought a GBA yet. Cheap. Now I have a GBA, and have had one for a while, but hey! Still cheap. So I have only played Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, and Silver. I had Red and Silver, my brother had Blue and Gold, and we swapped (or he got bored and I took it). We each had our own copies of Yellow, because my mother is not a fool.
I bring this up because I felt like some mindless entertainment, Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time is too hard just now (stupid spear-swinger), and Tetris is pretty mindless, but it has some tension. Bubble Bobble, Mario, FF Tactics... they all felt too violent.
Pokemon! Adorable monsters beating the shit out of each other instead of cute not-pets sprites beating the shit out of each other. So I broke out my Pokemon Silver cartridge. (Because I am a sentimental dork, I had transferred my favorite pokemon from Red over back when I still ran on the GBC)
And I played for a while.
That turned into a longer while.
That turned into "hey, these two of my star party are cute- I should breed them."
Which made for an even longer while.
And then I decided I wanted a Dragonair, so I went to catch a higher-level Dratini. But I couldn't remember how to get to the place! So, on went the computer.
...big mistake. I found
Bulbapedia.
And spent three hours reading it.
I will one day update my handheld console. This might be to the DS, or it might be to whatever comes after the DS, I do not know. I may be cheap, but I tend to pick up my consoles just long enough after release for the price to drop- not so long that they're findable at the trade-in counter. I gleefully purchase used games (cheap!), but I like virgin consoles.
I have a thing.
Aside: because I am an EVEN BIGGER DORK, if the next
Shantae game is removed from indefinite limbo and actually comes out? I will be buying that console, I don't care how squeaky new or out-of-date it is, and I will be buying that game right off the press, SHANTAE.
Aside 2.0: I'd also buy a DS to support Pirated Games, but I'm'a wait until their games get produced. ♥
...that said, I am a Mewtard. I love Mew so bad I trained him from level TWO in Red, after beating the game, all the way up to level fifty, JUST TO SEE WHAT HE'D DO.
I realize there is probably medication for this.
I do not OWN Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, or a DS. I do not know if I WILL own a DS or those games... but one day, in the future, I will own an updated handheld console, and I will one day own a current version of Pokemon.
...I'm already making plans to get Mew off of eBay, at as low a level as I can with the sprite still being a legitimate character and not a glitch... and I know what that level is, for a game I do not own.
HUGE. DORK.
