(Lack of) High-Resolution Monitors
I want to replace my monster CRT with a newer, power-efficient LCD display. The problem is that no one seems to make an external display that will be a reasonable replacement. All I want is the same, or better, display capability in the same, or less, space. My current display is a 19" CRT that I drive at 1920x1440. (BTW, this is limited by the graphics card, not the monitor.) The closest I can get to this is a 22" LCD with a native resolution of 1920x1200 and costing over $800. I can get that resolution in a laptop with a 17" display. I've considered buying a laptop for the display and hacking a case to hold it.
When I've asked about this product, I get lots of reasons why it is an unreasonable requirement. Let me say again, I already know this resolution will work for me. I've been using it for most of a decade. I like having room to put lots of information on the display. I like being able to see more of the document or program I'm working with.
Even the 22" display will use more of my desk than the existing CRT, so this is a poor solution at best.
All the parts for this product already exist. I just don't understand why no manufacturer making them. I believe there is a market here. I don't have the capitol to demonstrate this and I expect to be buried in competition from the established players as soon as I did.
I'm seriously considering the $800 display. I would probably buy a 19" Flat Panel Display with 1920x1200 or better resolution at that price point. (The laptop solution is currently $1300.)
