Sandbags and helicopters
Before anyone else IMs / texts / calls / emails me, I will just say that yes, I am right in the flood zone, but I'm fine because (a) my house is about 4-5 metres above the river wall and (b) it hasn't breached anyway. My parents were evacuated because they are lower down and right on the riverside, so they were here for breakfast at 7am! Tom's school is open but all the roads are shut so he can't get in, and my college was saying at 7.15 they were open, but when I got dressed and went in, it turned out they had changed their minds so we both have a day off now.
The best part about the situation is that the local surfers have done a phone chain or something and all turned up to surf the flood tide! I went down to the beach and took lots of photos and video and I will see where I can upload them later. I keep wondering how long they will keep going before they all get hypothermia - even with drysuits it's gotta be chilly surfing the north sea when it's only 5C outside and very windy. Anyway, I'm off to see if the local supermarket is open because I've got quite hungry standing out there watching the waves in the freezing cold.
