Eggnog or Hot Chocolate?
Hot Chocolate! Particularly Swiss Miss with mini-marshmallows.
Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Wrapped, of course. Where’s the fun in just setting them out? Nothing to rip open and fling!
Colored lights on tree/house or white?
Coloured lights on both, as many as possible.
Do you hang mistletoe?
Nope.
When do you put your decorations up?
The week before the Christmas party.
What is your favorite holiday dish?
Mom’s scalloped potatoes and glazed ham with mustard.
Favorite holiday memory as a child?
I have 2 - one general and one specific:
- Waking up really early, reaching down to the foot of the bed where are stockings were stuffed full and opening them in bed.
- When I was 8, I really wanted a stuffed ninja turtle for Christmas. That was the year they first came out. I had begged for one, and on Christmas Eve, I waited until my parents weren’t around to poke my finger into every package with my name on it. One package revealed white plush which I knew HAD to be the teeth of the ninja turtle doll (if you have one, you know what I mean).
The next morning, that was the first present I opened. But it wasn’t a ninja turtle - it was a pair of plush slippers that looked like basketball sneakers. I opened every gift but there was no Ninja turtle. Then my dad said, ‘Hey, what’s that?’
Up on the tree, standing behind the star, was a Michaelangelo plushie! Dad said it had been up there the night before but we had never really looked up. I got my Mikey plushie (which I still have, minus 2 suction cups) and to this day, I have a habit of peeking behind the stars of trees to see if there’s anything hidden behind them.
When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
I honestly don’t remember.
Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
We could open just one and the ‘rents got to choose it. They usually gave us something like slippers or nightgowns to open - fooey!
How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
TONS of decorations. Mom had an entire Christmas village she’d set up all over the living room. There were plush snowmen everywhere, Santa and his reindeer on the coffee table and giant candy canes to light the path outside the house.
Snow! Love it or Dread it?
Meh - it’s pretty but it gets old fast. Shoveling was not fun and waiting for the car to defrost in the morning sucked. Though snow in Shanghai is rare, it’s fun to see, so I guess it’s not all bad.
Can you ice skate?
I think it’s a law that you’re not truly considered Canadian unless you can skate. We used to have a VHS of e playing ringette when I was 5 or something. You learn early.
Do you remember your favorite gift?
Mikey!
What's the most important thing about the holidays for you?
Hosting the family dinners. I do not know how we got that many people seated in our living room and dining room combined but we did.
What is your favorite holiday dessert?
Anything my mom makes, be it pies, crumbles, fudge, baked apples, date squares, you name it.
What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Watching Christmas movies - the Grinch (original cartoon), Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer (I wanna be a dentist!), Santa Claus is coming to town (Put one foot in front of the other! And soon you’ll be walking out the door-or-or!), Frosty the Snowman (busy busy busy!). We’ve seen them every year but you just can’t miss them. Even here in Shanghai I find them online and watch them at this time of year.
What tops your tree?
A star.
Which do you prefer: giving or receiving?
Hee, both. I love finding the perfect present for someone, and I’m usually pretty good at it for the most part. I also love getting presents that are truly ME - I can tell the person knows me really well by what they give me.
Candy Canes?
I like to dip them in Sunny D orange juice. Or hot chocolate. J
Favourite Christmas movie?
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer! By far! Bumbles BOUNCE!
Saddest Christmas song?
Never heard one.
What is your favorite Christmas song?
Oooh, not sure. I like the classics - Rudolph, Jingle Bells, Feliz Navidad, etc - and I like the funny ones (12 pains of Christmas makes me bust a gut laughing every time) like Grandma got run over by a reindeer or the Real Slim Santa (crude, don’t play for the kiddies), but I guess I’ll have to go with the classic, ‘Walking ‘Round in Women’s Underwear’ based on Walking in a Winter Wonderland.
