Last year I was having retirement thoughts. When all was said and done with that process, I had determined that my financial situation required that I continue working through 2009. Well, that didn't happen.. When I returned from the Thanksgiving weekend I was informed that I would be laid off at the end of the year. I was. In a way, I kind of understood their choice as most of my co-workers were much younger than I and are still raising young children.
Fast forward to the present.
This last six months have been increasingly odd or perhaps in the last six months I have become increasingly odd. I was never one to identify myself too strongly with what I did for a living. On the other hand, I have always worked, been good at what I did and felt useful. In retrospect, the void in my life has been terrible..
I have looked for work, but as you know, the job market has been dismal. My resume looks good but I am afraid that my age works against me. Yet, I still need to feel useful.
With the time on my hands, I have tried to help family and friends. It is probably true that I may have gone over the top with that. If so, I am sorry. It's just that doing SOMETHING that makes me feel useful feels good and is important to me.
I am now rethinking a lot of this. I need something to do that will fill that void. Until the job market loosens up a bit, perhaps I can find a volunteer position somewhere, doing something that needs to be done, is useful and not concentrate it all in that narrow little space of family and friends.
