Dark Star Safari.

I am curious your opinions on the book "Dark Star Safari." Let me know! I think it was an horrifying look at Africa and a wake up call to all of us in the humanitarian world. ANYONE who works for the developing world, gives donations to humanitarian organizations, or those who give a rip should read this book. (BTW, If you are an American tax payer you give a lot of money to the developing world.) The reason you should read this book is to understand that much of the aid that has poured(trickled) into Africa has done MORE harm then good. Remember, Africa is the only continent to fall behind in Standards of living, birth mortality, etc... Even, some of the productive countries in Africa have fallen apart! i.e. Malawi.

I have always had a loose understanding of the things he proposes and until I read his book I didn't want to work in Africa. Frankly, because it overwhelms me in despair and I can't begin to grasp the depths of the problems and didn't know where to start. Well, now I sortof do know. He is a little extremist and the pessimist out there will probably love the author, Paul Theroux. Well, I don't want to throw any meat out there quite yet. I want to see what you think... This book was given to me by an executive from Peace Corps and the author has a Nobel Peace price and was on the NY Times Bestsellers. He is an excellent writer. Take a look.
