i had my own personal parade

so i took the day off. after i woke up I sat on the porch chair swing and read (gasp!) Cryptonomicon. (Sorry Sondy, a couple of pages (unimportant ones) fell out when i was reading, i think the humidity is killing the adhesive in the binding.) I hear some honking, so I look up, and for the first time ever, i see a van carrying a bunch of shriners wearing their silly hats. I giggle to my self and continue reading. But then i hear another vehacle, this time a shriner on a moped, followed my a schriner on one of those tiny cars (they actually exist!) and a cop. After reading a little more, I look up and see a pickup truck carrying a bunch of kids and a banner that says something like "Kids raise the american flag". I continue reading, and a little while later, i hear a car playing loud music. As it drives by, I look up, and it is a jazz band playing on their float. A few more things pass including Mark Sheldon - Champaign County Clerk float (Mark, I didn't realize that you were a public servant as well). So I had my own little parade sitting out there. Plus it was raining and I was on a covered porch, so I think i had the best seat.

I also went and saw fireworks here, i went with a couple of people from the coop. (this makes me glad to be living in the coop, otherwise i wouldn't have people to hang out with. the grad students i work with seem to have their own live, thus i would have to rely on my roommate(s)) This was quite an experience, and the fireworks were choreographed to music. It was interested, but I think the music takes away from the fireworks. I like to be able to appreciate the sounds of the fireworks and the silence between them. But now that i'm back in the coop, people all over the neighborhood are light fireworks, all i need ot do is look out one of my windows. People love their fireworks here. I have hear at least one firework go off each night I have been here.
