Hiro opened his eyes. Then, noticing they had fell shut again, he opened them one more time. Looking at the alarm clock on the night stand next to him, he came to notice that he would have another hour or two until he had to get up. This was much to early to be awake.
The reason for this, though, was that he was alone in their bed. He rolled over on the spot where his wife usually slept and curled up there. It was still warm and smelled wonderfully like her. Halfway back into the land of dreams, he wondered why she'd gotten up in the middle of the night. It was enough to bring him back at being awake. He was curious and also slightly worried about her.
With a groan, he heaved his body up and crawled out of their bed. Now that his eyes started to get used to the twilight, he could see faint light coming out from below the bathroom door. He found his pants and slipped them on before he finally left the bed and padded towards the bathroom. There were no noises from inside the other room but he listened for them anyway.
Standing in front of the closed door -they never closed doors inside their home or at least hadn't done so in years - he raised his hand to knock. Then he sighed, his hand dropping again.
“Honey, are you in there?” he asked and felt stuipd for it not a second later. Of course she was in there, who else could it be. “May I come in?” he added quickly to make it sound less stuipd. In his ears, he failed misserably at it.
When there was no answer, he pushed down the handle and to his luck, the door wasn't locked or he would have walked right into it. He found his wife sitting on the edge of the bath tub staring at something in her hands that looked like a thermometer.
He sat down next to her and wrapped his arm around her. “Do you want to come back to bed with me?” he whispered. He felt so tried. He wasn't a moring person and he definitely would never be an early morning person. “It's nice and warm back there.”
Sora shook her head. Hiro could feel her dark locks brushing against his skin. She didn't even look up at him.
Curious about the thermometer in her hands, he looked down as well. “Are you having a fev-” he wanted to say but the realization made him cut himself off. “Oh,” was all he could utter. A pregnancy test. His wife was holding a used pregnancy test and stared down at it. He just whished he could understand what it was saying.
He reached for the packaging on the floor, without letting go of his wife. He was so surprised that he not yet knew what to feel. But he could feel a grin widening on his face as he read the package insert. He turned to his wife to feel her shaking, tears rolling down her cheek and falling into her lap.
He took his arm off her and slid down to the floor in front of her to take her hands. “For how long have you been assuming it?” he asked. He was still smiling from one ear to another. The realization of all this made it slowly into his mind. He was going to be a father.
“A week,” she whispered. “Maybe two. I was overdue on my period and ...” Her voice trailed off. He nodded. They hadn't exactly been careful about using a condom every time or looking up on the calendar when it was save to have sex or anything. Looking back, it had been bound to happen for quite some time.
He stroked her hand. Then, following a sudden inpulse, he streched up to kiss her forehead. He smiled at her the brightest smile he ever had. Even though he hadn't known it before, this was all he had ever wanted to have. “I love you,” he said.
She nodded. Then, she sighed, looked up and smiled back at him with teary eyes. “Me too,” she whispered.
He kissed her. Taking the pregnancy test out of her hand, he stood up and placed the thing on the basin. “Let's get back to bed, alright?” he said. He didn't think he could go back to sleep now, but he wanted to cuddle and be nice to her and hug and kiss her until it was time for them to get up for work.
Sora slowly got up. She took the offered arm and leaned against her husband. She was smiling serenly. Hiro didn't think he had ever seen a more beautiful person in his life.
As they slid back under their blanket, Sora giggled. She kissed him on the tip of the nose and looked him deep in the eyes. “I see how much this makes you happy, so you go off with a warning,” she whispered. “There's a probability that the result from the pregnancy test is all wrong.” Then, she kissed him again, full of love. “But then, we could have another try.”
He nodded happily. Not even for a second, he believed the words he had just heard. He just knew, that their life as two would soon end.
