The American Civil Liberties Union says it's considering a lawsuit against Border Patrol checkpoints on the Olympic Peninsula.

A state ACLU official, Shankar Narayan, told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that a community meeting last week in Chimacum brought out hundreds of people concerned about encroachment on their privacy and freedom of movement.

Since February, the Border Patrol has conducted 53 roadblocks at the Anacortes ferry terminal, on Highway 20 near Newhalem and on the Olympic Peninsula, including near the Hood Canal bridge. Agents checked nearly 25,000 vehicles carrying almost 42,000 people. Officers took 81 undocumented immigrants into custody and turned 19 people over to other agencies for state crimes.

Blaine Border Patrol Chief John Bates says the checkpoints are legal.
