21 years ago would be 1987. I'd just finished my first go at college, and IIRC was back on benefit, trying (not terribly hard) to get work. I'd not learned to drive, and was definetly not a Goth - just a scruffy kid with no interest in fashion or scenes, who listened to any kind of music that sounded good, and spent an awful lot of time out on my bike, looking for muddy places, and building bonfires on the shoreline.
I've a feeling mum and I had done our first bit of stockmarket dabbling (3i) about then. Margret Thatcher was still PM (and had been since I was in primary school), the Falklands was five years past, and Gulf War 1 still four years away.
I'd been to the odd gig, but not many. Don't think I'd ever been in a nightclub (barring the under-18s nights I went to when I was in school), was still experimenting with pubs. I was only 20, and it'd be five more years before I'd my first real girlfriend (not counting a brief relationship with my best matre's g/f's sister, which turned into long-term freindship instead, and even that didn't start till 1989).
