Exultation is the going
Of an inland soul to sea,
Past the houses - past the headlands -
Into deep Eternity -
Bred as we, among the mountains,
Can the sailor understand
The divine intoxication
Of the first league out from land?
- Emily Dickinson
I love love love Emily Dickinson. I discovered her through the literature history class I took during the spring. I like this poem because to me it's about being hungry for adventure even though you really aren't adventurous as a person. Everybody, even "inland souls," has a wild child inside them that's longing to trade the green hills and meadows of home for the open sea.
