RPF: As the World Turns: Secret Oeuvre (Jake/Van | K | 350w)

Van is easy to draw. (Written for vocabulary soup #11.)
Secret Oeuvre
Van is easy to draw-everything about him was memorable. His lips, curved upwards in matching high arcs; his nose, round at the bottom, slightly bell-shaped; his dimples, which Jake’s hands can’t seem to get enough of penciling in (which makes sense, in light of how his eyes can’t get enough of looking at them). His jawline and cheekbones are fairly straightforward, eyes just the slightest bit hooded towards the inner corner.
And Jake is inspired like he hasn’t been in years; his sketches of Van are nothing like those mis-proportioned doodles of Spider-Man that he spent most of his youth on. (Slightly homoerotic, now that he looks back on it.) These were good-good enough that he could look at them and feel a dual rush of affection for the subject and pride in what he’d done.
He puts the finishing touches on the latest one, smearing the charcoal across Van’s lips, delicately using the tiniest nub he can hold between his fingers to put in the hair-thin outline of shadows on the upper lip. And with that, he’s done, three hours, two beers and one episode of Rome later.
“Ah,” he sighs in satisfaction when he holds it out, lightly blowing the dust fall off of it. He’s captured Van laughing in thick, impressionist lines, but with enough fine detail-work to leave no doubt as to the model. It may be the best he’s done yet.
He opens up the folder on his coffee table, and slips it between two blank white sheets to keep the other sketches inside pristine. He’ll look at again tomorrow, when he’s had a little distance, to see if it needs and final touch-ups or erasures before sealing it.
Picking up his beer, he hits play on the next episode, ready to just let his eye relax and take in visuals instead of analyzing them.
But his evening is tinged with a sense of regret that the subject of his work, of his secret and sometimes frightening amount of admiration, is the one person who will never see it.
