Time for an entry of sorts?
I feel like after going on such a long hiatus from posting here, I should catch you up on what's been going on in my life (especially since I haven't talked to either of you that actually read this blog since, like, March). However, that post will have to wait until another day, because I actually have a topic I'd like to write about right now.
Chatspeak.
Now, being an English speaker, I've seen an awful lot of English chatspeak. I'll tell you what: I think it's stupid, pointless, lazy, and even childish. I understand its roots; having a phone without a full keyboard, I, too, understand the pain of having to type out an entire message on a number pad. But when it comes to the internet, come on. You're using a fucking keyboard! The amount of time it would take you to write out whole words as opposed to little abbreviations is next to nothing. The worst part is that basically all the words commonly abbreviated in chatspeak are 3-4 letters long, and their abbreviations are 1-2 letters long. Really? You're so lazy that you can't type two extra letters to spell out the word "you" instead of "u"? Or your? Or - and this one I really don't get - "what" instead of "wat"?
Okay, rant about English chatspeak over.
But as much as I dislike English chatspeak, Spanish chatspeak has to be at least three times worse. Not only does it copy the main attributes of English chatspeak (i.e. que/q), but it adds a new one: letter substitution. Hard C's become K's and S's become Z's. I don't get it. Seriously, what's the point? It doesn't save you any time (unless you consider the one letter difference between quiero and kiero to be a time saver). Andy, Kaz, if you guys read this, explain it to me. Meanwhile, I'm going to go powerwash my brain to forget this awful destruction to language. */melodramatic*
EDIT: Oh yeah, and EPIC irony with that last post, eh? I would delete it, but he doesn't read this anyway, so I suppose it doesn't matter if it's there or not.
