Personality
General: Scotty is laid-back, friendly, and enjoys nothing more than a good drink. Rumours that he is responsible for the still under the primary heat exchangers are, however, entirely unfounded. He flirts as a matter of course and often without even realising he's doing it.
He loves his work, and approaches life in general with the same interest, curiosity, and joy of discovery that he would a new type of engine. He has what some would consider an enviable ability to take things as they come and not dwell on the past: he ambles cheerfully through life armed with the unshakeable conviction that it'll all turn out alright in the end.
Underneath that cheerful exterior, however, is a remarkable combination of unpredictable intelligence and indestructable faith. He is also absolutely loyal to the Enterprise and her crew - for them he has made the impossible possible, and doesn't doubt that he'll be called upon to do it again.
On that subject, he's still not sure what to make of his recently-acquired position as the ship's chief of engineering. He's never been in command of anything in his life. People keep telling him he shouldn't be handling routine maintenence and the like himself - apparently he has minions for that now - but that sort of hands-on work is why he became an engineer in the first place. He's been 'one of the lads' his whole life, and he's not sure how he feels about suddenly being The Man.
Goals/Dreams: To keep the Enterprise at the top of the line, and running in perfect order
Quirks/Habits: In times of stress his accent thickens into near-incomprehensibility - colleagues have been known to ask what language he's speaking.
First Impression: A blur of cheerful, hyperactive Scottishness wielding a spanner.
Background
Education: University of Glasgow 2238-2243 (MEng), Starfleet Academy 2243-2246 (PhD)
Parents: Eilean Scott and Craig Campbell
Siblings: Robert Scott (2219), Katherine Preston née Scott (2234)
Personal History: Scotty grew up in the Scottish town of Linlithgow. His parents were unmarried and both worked long hours - he and his siblings were frequently left to their own devices, or in the care of various relatives. He discovered an affinity for technology as an adolescent, helping out in his father's garage. At sixteen Scotty achieved the rare distinction of being actively headhunted by a university rather than applying there, after accidentally disproving the Prerera Theorem (regarding photon torpedo detonation) in his higher physics exam paper. He graduated with honours at twenty-one and accepted an offer to do a PhD at Starfleet Academy.
After getting his PhD at the Academy he travelled extensively, working his passage on a series of ships. Later he returned to the Academy to work as a teaching and research assistant on Admiral Archer's Advanced Relativistic Mechanics course - however, he lost the position due to disciplinary action after a failed experiment involving transwarp beaming and a beagle.
Shortly afterward he was reassigned to the Federation outpost on Delta Vega - it is debatable whether or not there was a causal link there. He spent six months on Delta Vega before meeting Jim Kirk and Spock Prime, and subsequently having his theory of transwarp beaming proven right. He later replaced the recently-deceased Olsen as chief engineer of the Enterprise. He is still mildly bemused to find himself Chief of Engineering on the Fleet's flagship
