There is not much to teach really (Google RMR or Caloric needs for more info). I think I posted a link on the original comment, although I'm not exactly sure to which one you’re referring to… If I didn't, the one I use is here: http://www.nutritiondata.com/tools/calories-burned basically there is some math behind how many calories your body needs just to exist in exactly the way it is neither gaining nor loosing (with some fudge factor I'm sure as no mathematical model can be 100%). So that is considered your RMR and for healthy weight loss it is generally accepted that you want to loose between 1 and 2 lbs a week. This works out to mean that you need to create a caloric deficit between 3600 and 7200 calories each week (1 lb = 3600 cal). So the way that works is by eating less and exercising you create that deficit...and loose weight.

So for me I go to the above linked page and put my statistic in; and find that I need to eat somewhere around 2500 cal a day to stay at my current weight. If I want to loose 1lb a week I need to eat only 2000 cal a day (500*7=3500cal) and bike for an hour. Math says I should loose weight. Usually it works too if I manage to stay right at 2000 cal a day...I personally have found that I have a carbohydrate threshold - above which I cant loose weight even if I eat only 1600 cal a day.

Hope that helps - let me know if you have any more questions.
