Chapter 2

The show went well; Adam made sure to give the audience a great performance. However, he couldn’t stop worrying about his sister. After the encore, Lane wordlessly handed Adam his phone as he left the stage. He mumbled a quick “thanks" and headed straight for his dressing room.

Tommy started to follow him but Monte grabbed his shoulder and steered him in the opposite direction. Monte cut him off before he could protest.

“Give him some time alone. He’s probably going to call his mom. You can check on him when we’re all back on the buses.”

Tommy threw on last concerned glance at Adam’s dressing room but went along willingly with Monte.

Leila watched Mackenzie sleeping as she talked quietly on the phone to her son.

“Adam, I promise you, Mackenzie is fine. She’s actually coming home tomorrow.”

“Really? That’s great. Do you need me to come home and help you take care of her?”

Leila sighed. She knew Adam was worried about his sister but he had shows to do.

“Thanks, sweetie, but we’ll be fine. Your dad is going to be staying here for awhile to help out.”

“Oh!” Adam sounded genuinely surprised by that. “Well that’s good. If you need me for anything, just call me.”

“I will. But I’m sure we’ll be fine. You need to focus on your shows. How was tonight’s show by the way?”

“It was good. The audience loved it.” He paused. “Can I talk to her?”

“She’s sleeping right now. I’ll have her call you when we get home tomorrow.

Adam sighed. He just really wanted to hear his sister’s voice.

“Thanks, Mom. I should go now. I’m still wearing my stage clothes and I need to shower before I get on the bus.”

They said their goodbyes and hung up.

Mackenzie rolled over then and opened her eyes.

“Was that Adam?”

Her voice sounded distant and hollow. Leila hated to hear her daughter sound like that when normally she was so full of life.

Leila nodded. “He called to see how you are.”

Mackenzie stared at her mom before rolling back over and closing her eyes.

This was going to be so hard. As much as she hoped that having Eber there would help, she knew that it wouldn’t make this any easier. Mackenzie may have survived but she would never be the same.

Adam sped through his shower and rushed through autograph signing. He felt bad about that, his fans had always been so supportive of him, but he just wasn’t in the right frame of mind. Even though his mom assured him that his sister was fine, he was still worried about her.

He went straight to his room in the back of the bus, nodding hello to the dancers as he went. He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn’t even notice Tommy sitting on the couch. Tommy, who was on the wrong bus.

Wordlessly Tommy stood up and followed Adam to the back and barged into the room, not even bothering to knock.

Adam didn’t have to turn around to know it was Tommy. No one else would be comfortable with just walking in.

“You’re not supposed to be on this bus.”

Adam still had his back to Tommy. Tommy walked over to him and rested his hand on Adam’s shoulder.

“I was worried about you.”

Adam placed his hand over Tommy’s and squeezed.

“I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.”

Adam released Tommy’s hand, sitting down on his bed. Tommy automatically sat down next to him, draping his arm over Adam’s shoulders.

“How’s your sister?”

“Mom said she’s doing ok. She should be released from the hospital tomorrow.”

“Well that’s great,” Tommy said brightly.

When Adam didn’t respond, Tommy began to worry. He turned so that he was facing Adam. He took Adam’s chin in his hand and turned Adam’s head so that they were facing each other.

“Adam?”

Adam sighed. He knew that Tommy wanted an explanation as to why he wasn’t happier about his sister going home.

“It’s going to be hard for her. She lost her best friend. I should be there for her.”

Tommy didn’t know what to say to that so he squeezed Adam’s shoulders in what he hoped was a reassuring manner.

Adam took a deep breath and exhaled, letting the tension flow out of him and he relaxed into Tommy’s embrace.

Tommy ran a hand through Adam’s hair, noting how soft it was considering how often he had to dye it.

Adam let out a barely audible moan and closed his eyes, leaning into Tommy’s touch. He hoped that Tommy didn’t hear him; he didn’t want to make things awkward between him and his straight bassist. But it had been such a stressful 48 hours and Tommy’s hands playing with his hair felt absolutely amazing.

Tommy did hear him though, and he noticed how Adam leaned into his touch. He couldn’t help smirking. He wasn’t sure why but he liked knowing that he had some kind of effect on Adam. His hand traveled down to Adam’s cheek, gently caressing, enjoying the feel of Adam’s skin under his fingertips.

Adam leaned further into Tommy’s touch, almost nuzzling against his hand. Without conscious thought, he reached up and ran his hand through Tommy’s blond fringe, coming to rest on the back of his neck, rubbing slow circles there.

Tommy shivered in response and pulled Adam’s head closer to his, their foreheads resting against each other. They were both breathing heavy and had their eyes closed.

Tommy breathed deeply, inhaling Adam’s intoxicating scent. He opened his eyes then and saw Adam’s blue eyes, which had darkened slightly, looking at him curiously. Through his Adam-induced haze, rational thought came racing back to him. He jumped back, nearly falling off the bed in his haste.

Trying to make light of a heavy situation Adam joked, “What? Do I smell that bad?”

Tommy blushed profusely, and Adam couldn’t help thinking how cute he looked.

Tommy stood up and righted his clothes, avoiding Adam’s gaze.

“Look, Adam, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have -“

“Shh.” Adam had stood up and walked over to him, placing his finger over Tommy’s mouth. “Don’t worry about it.”

Tommy nodded, not sure how else to respond. He gestured toward the front of the bus and started to walk to the door.

“I’ll just go to bed.”

Adam smiled to himself, amusement clearly written all over his face.

“You’re on the wrong bus.”

Tommy stopped mid-stride; he had forgotten about that.

“Oh. Yeah.”

He stood there, feeling awkward and just a little stupid.

Adam rolled his eyes and reached for Tommy’s arm, pulling him back to the bed.

“Just sleep here. You’re small and there’s plenty of room.”

Plus, no sense in letting that near kiss make their friendship awkward.

Tommy sat down on the side of the bed opposite Adam, stretching his legs out in front of him. He agreed to some random movie Adam picked out to watch; it didn’t matter to him, no movie could make this any less awkward for him.

Adam settled himself next to Tommy, aware of the rather large space Tommy had put between them. He glanced at Tommy out of the corner of his eye. He was rigid and didn’t look comfortable at all. His arms were crossed over his chest, eyes staring straight ahead, eerily not blinking. Adam shook his head in amusement. Apparently Tommy was a little thrown off by what transpired between them. This didn’t entirely surprise Adam. Tommy was straight and what happened clearly didn’t fit with that label. Unless, maybe, Tommy wasn’t as straight as he claimed to be.

Adam stopped that train of thought right there. He couldn’t go down that path and what that would mean. What it could mean for them.
