I have finally beaten FFXIII.

Yes, I know it came out like two years ago - and I had the damn thing preordered, so I wasn't slacking around. Then I spent like two months messing around on the Archylte Steppe trying to kill the stupid Oretoises, and then I moved to Seattle and didn't bring by PS3, and then my PS3 broke. Fun times.

I can honestly say the ending surprised me - though admittedly, I had no idea what was supposed to be going on through most of the game. This is partly because of the villains' annoying tendency to use ridiculously dense double-speak that was a lot easier to parse when the franchise wasn't using voice actors (not to mention most of the villains use crazy flanges and are practically incomprehensible to start with) and partly because explaining things is not really one of the game's priorities. Not only is the game an exercise of "run toward that marker on the minimap and then another cutscene happens," but the characters spend most of the time getting either manipulated or led by the hand, so they don't have any real control over their actions either.

Come to think of it, I might have been so reluctant to leave the Pulse sections because they were the only part of the game where I could run around and do whatever. I also actually managed to pick up some kind of morbid image about what happened to everyone on Pulse - my impression was, the war decimated a civilization so that they started getting overrun by monsters, the survivors started becoming l'Cie to fight off the superbeasts, then a bunch of them turned into Cie'th and made things even worse. Although I'd love a clearer idea of what Pulse was like before - I mean, Oerba had that giant railroad bridge, so it can't have been quite as wild as they make it sound.
Anyway. Now that I've finally got the game beat, I can get back to the important stuff. Like waiting for FFXIII-2 writing fic! I've been kicking around this AU idea that I had no idea how to plot because I didn't actually understand what was going on in the game, but this week I discovered that I'd actually figured out enough to start plotting. (This probably doesn't mean anything good for my plan to actually finish Moonlight and Sidelines; I should probably replay FF8 next.)

Oh, and the hell?  I actually didn't mind FFXIII's soundtrack - even the lyrics in the chocobo song, but I think I've managed to complain about every game's soundtrack since FF10. And I'd already talked myself out of getting the XIII-2 collector's edition because I didn't want to buy the music on spec, so I'll say I saw this coming.

Also, apparently Gysahl is apparently prounounced "geese-all," so I've been being a total Philistine for the last 14 years.
