Boston City Council Recognizes the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition’s 10 Years of Service

Boston, MA [10/5/11] Boston City Councilor At-Large Felix G. Arroyo issued an official resolution celebrating the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition’s 10-year anniversary today.

“With this milestone, we have a great opportunity to recognize the service MTPC has provided to the transgender community. As Chair of the City Council’s committee that focuses on human rights, I am proud of our history of supporting LGBT rights and I understand the importance of continuing our work to promote equality,” Arroyo stated during the Boston City Council meeting.

“I am very grateful to the Boston City Council for supporting the work of MTPC and their longstanding commitment to improving the lives of transgender people in Boston,” said Gunner Scott, MTPC’s Executive Director.

This was not the first time MTPC has been in front of the Boston City Council. In 2001, MTPC was formed to address the lack of non-discrimination protections for transgender individuals in Boston. In 2002, MTPC worked to pass a Boston city ordinance for non-discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression, which passed in October 2002.

Since then, the Boston City Council has been an active proponent of the Transgender Equal Rights Bill. The pending statewide legislation would offer the same protections from discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, and education that transgender youth and adults have had in Boston since 2002.

MTPC will celebrate its ten-year anniversary with their supporters on Thursday, October 6th, 2011 with a party entitled "eXtatic: Growing on 10 Years".

This celebration of MTPC’s of commitment to serving the transgender community will take place at Club Oberon in Cambridge, MA from 7 to 11 pm. Club Oberon is located at 2 Arrow Street in Harvard Square. There will be light refreshments, a short program of speaking and performance, and dancing until 11pm.

The event will be featuring performances by Lorelei Erisis, a Second City trained performer and Miss Trans New England 2009; artistic director of the Femme Show, Maggie Cee; Johnny Blazes, named “one of Boston’s rising stars” by Stuff Magazine; and hosted by one of Boston's Legendary Performers, Ms Lakia Mondale. Dancing to follow with DJ Tre'Andre.
