1920 - Timothy Leary
American writer and psychologist, he is famous for being a proponent of the use of LSD for its mental and spiritual benefits. His phrase "Turn on, tune in, drop out." became an anthem for the 60's counter-cultural movement. Just as Ken Kesey was largely responsible for the psychedelic movement on the west coast, Leary and his followers were a strong force in the east coast movement. The two groups had vastly different philosophies on the usage of LSD. Kesey's group was all about the experience of doing the drug while Leary's group was all about using the drug as a tool to unlock the mysteries of existence. The tale of the two groups meeting is a part of Tom Wolfe's "The Electric Acid Cool-aid Test".

1925 - Robert Rauschenberg
One of my favorites of the Abstract Expressionism movement... especially the "Combines" in which he integrated sculptural elements into his paintings. Rauschenberg was married and had a child with the painter Susan Weil but following their divorce he had a relationship with Jasper Johns.

1969 - Spike Jonze
Jonze is a producer and film director. In 1999 he created "Being John Malkovich" but he is most famous for doing music videos for artists like X, Luscious Jackson, Beastie Boys, Weezer, Dinosaur Jr, R.E.M., and Daft Punk.
