Character
Name: X/Phantom Thief Sai - his name is written as "X" but it's pronounced "Sai" as it's an abbreviation of "XI"; thus, I'll use "Sai" in voice/video/action, but if he's using text, he'll type "X".
Series: Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro
Timeline: Immediately pre-Sicks; right after Neuro rescues Yako from Sai's trap.

Affiliation: Trainer.

Personality:

When a person first sees Sai, they get the impression of a very young, cheery and immature child. This is completely accurate; Sai's personality is simply childish. He's bratty, a little egotistical, immature and selfish to the point that he will throw tantrums over things he's upset with, and he becomes petty and jealous easily. He acts innocent and very playful, and seems to treat a lot of things as a game. He doesn't really care for or notice the atmosphere of a situation; even in a serious situation, he can often be ridiculous, childish and inappropriate. He has no regard for other people or even human lives; if someone pisses him off, he will kill them. If someone has something he wants, he'll kill them. If he feels like killing someone, he'll kill them. He's actually quite simplistic.

Sai is prone to mood swings along with his tantrums. In an instant, he can go from affectionate to whiny to mature or serious to chipper and playful straight into a murderous rage. If he's angry, he'll lash out violently with no restraint and he won't stop until another mood swing kicks in or he becomes distracted. His moods and thoughts are extremely unstable, unpredictable and disjointed at times. Usually, his attention span is pretty short, except for when it comes to one thing - his identity.

Since his cells are constantly mutating (while he has his powers, of course), he can't remember most things for any longer than a week. This also means that, due to the fact that he changes the shape of his entire being regularly, he has completely forgotten who he originally was; Sai has the biggest and most literal case of an identity crisis ever. He is obsessed with finding out who or what he is supposed to be, and it's something he never stops investigating; everything he does is done with the intention of being a step closer to his "real" self. For this, he'll do anything - most of the time, it's killing people, grinding up their bodies and shoving them in glass boxes to see their cells. He believes that through investigating the cells of various kinds of people, he'll be able to find himself - this is why he also becomes obsessed with Neuro. He hopes that the cells of a demon might help him figure out his identity, and he wants to go back to being that person entirely. Until that happens, he feels lost and incomplete.

While it may seem that he won't listen to anyone and he would rather kill someone than have them near him, Sai is capable of more human emotions. After she chooses to put herself beside him, he becomes very attached to the ex-terrorist who names herself Ai; she plays the serious and caring role to his immature and reckless self, and he comes to love her to some extent, although in what way depends on the time and day. She says herself that depending on the day, she is his lover, his sister, his mother and his friend. Sai will take her advice and allow her to plan for him, because he is reckless and he doesn't think things through; he would rather act quickly and just do as he wishes, but Ai puts his wishes and ideas into sensible and careful plans. With her, he is unstoppable, invisible, resilient, although his personality may be more petulant and childish near her; without her, he is a lost child, and he is completely vulnerable.

He's generally uncaring and even snappish or dismissive to people he's not interested in, but there are times other than Ai where he will show a softer side, although very briefly - while he has no patience for people who try to analyse him (such as Yako), as he thinks there is only one "true" self and only one path to it, he's strangely gentle when it comes to family matters. He's a little bit soft to people who are close to or think of their families. He speaks fondly of it and actually uncovers a priceless jewel for a young girl, saying that it was left for her from her father with love; he says he could "never understand the love between a parent and child", and that it has no value to him because it holds a feeling that can only resonate between two specific people. In that instant, he shows a shocking understanding of human emotion, and a strangely kind side to himself.

All of this adds up to give Sai an extremely chilling and overpowering air; upon first encountering him, Yako is frozen stiff in fear because of the cruel aura he gives off. A vicious murderer with such a childish but disturbing and cold expression shocks a lot of people to the core, and he is often terrifying to anyone who is unfortunate enough to encounter him. It might be that his murders are for a greater purpose, but sometimes, Sai is purely sadistic, cruel and violent.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Sai is painfully persistent and determined once he gets his mind set on a goal. He will continue with reckless disregard for his own well-being and all others around him, and he will pursue something doggedly once he has made the solid decision to get it. These may be rash decisions and he might be disappointed utterly once he's gotten what he was after, but he continues in the same fashion regardless, and once Sai is after something he becomes horrifyingly dangerous.

On the other hand, his recklessness, his ridiculous personality, his childlike behaviour and mentality, his constant feeling of being "lost" that can lead to massive vulnerability - these are all weaknesses that are only combated by his partnership with Ai. Without her, he is unplanned, and unhinged. His greatest fear will be realised the moment he enters Route - being completely unable to discover and return to who he really should be.

Samples

First Person Sample:

[Sai is sitting in front of his Ditto with his legs crossed and his hands on his feet, leaning forwards and chatting excitedly.]

-But what if that's not your true form? Maybe, a while ago, Ditto looked completely different and you and all the others have forgotten what that form looks like! [Ditto just... stares blankly, and Sai smiles, leans closer.] I mean, this is my default shape, and I'm stuck like this right now, but this isn't the real me. I don't know what my original self looks like either.

[He rocks back, looking up at the sky with a wide smile.]

Hey, what do you think Pokemon look like on the inside~? [He looks back down, and there's a chilling, dangerous glint in his eyes.] If I made you into a Red Box, would I see your cells? ... Hmm, does a thing like you even have blood or organs-? [His grin is thin, but borderline psychotic, and it bares his teeth a little.] Maybe... I should find out-

Ditto.

... Mm? [His expression goes back to something childish - curious and innocent.] Well, I can't change my cells right now, but since that means I retain my memories, I'd remember what I saw, right?

Third Person Sample:

He couldn't change. He'd tried and tried again, he'd cut his palm to see if the wound would heal, he'd tried to morph and alter even just the tiniest part of himself, he'd tested his strength and his eyesight and all of his senses- nothing. He couldn't change himself, he was stuck. Stuck in some form, some body and mentality that he knew wasn't his, he was finally a regular human but he was the wrong person and he couldn't stay like this. He wouldn't be forced to become someone he wasn't, he wouldn't. It wasn't fair that he would have to become a completely new person while everyone else got to be themselves. He'd find a way to get his abilities back, and he'd kill whoever the hell had done this to him.

He'd left the strange place he'd started in before he ended up killing anyone - mainly because he didn't know the extent of their powers, and he didn't even have enough strength to rip through someone. He had the body of a frail child, and it made him feel vulnerable, unaware of himself even more than ever. After fleeing the little town, he found himself pushing through grass and trees; he didn't hurry, and he didn't search frantically for something familiar, but he walked with a bit of casual confidence in his step. Unfamiliar or not, stripped of his powers or otherwise, he wasn't weak, and he'd kill anyone who tried to interfere with his goals, whether they be his plans to find himself or his current decision to find his abilities.

"Ditto!"

The strange noise didn't make him jump, but he did stop dead, and he threw a suspicious, scathing glare over his shoulder. There was a bizarre creature behind him, something tiny, and it looked like nothing he'd ever seen before. He blinked, and it blinked back at him.

"What do you want?" he snapped, cold. "I don't have time for distractions."

The two stared each other down for a long moment, when suddenly, the thing lurched - not in attack, and not even towards Sai, its entire body just shifted, stretched and elongated, twisted and pulled and distorted. The sequence was far too familiar for Sai not to figure out, and in a sudden flash of rage and jealousy, he grabbed at where he could see the throat of its new form about to appear.

He was choking a perfect image of himself.

"... So you have my abilities," he said quietly, voice laced with a dangerous fury. "Is this your fault? Did Neuro do this?! Give it back to me!"

The mirror image's expression didn't change in the slightest, perfectly blank, neutral and calm. It held its hands up silently, and Sai's grip on its neck weakened a little. He allowed it to step back and slip away, but he turned and watched it as it stepped around him, eyes on its back.

"I could kill you," he growled, wanting nothing more than the familiar sensation of the cells of his hands and arms warping and reshaping, or the stab of blades through his palms. "As soon as I've gotten my mutation back from you, I'll kill you."

But the creature was standing before him with an impassive face, one hand extended towards him and the other gesturing to some direction he couldn't see in through the trees and bushes. It waited, and it waited, until with a huff, Sai relented and stomped forward to follow it; it turned and led the way, walking with an even and measured pace while Sai trailed behind it, glaring petulantly, arms folded across his chest. They shoved through grass and bush and trees - or, more accurately, the creature shoved through and held things out of the way while Sai stepped through unobstructed - and finally came to a clearing. He frowned and glanced around, and realised that he could see the end of the long path he was travelling through just a moment ago only a few metres ahead of him.

"A shortcut?" he said, and looked at the thing. It was still holding his image, still staring at him with that calm and patient look that he abruptly recognised, everything he had been doing before he arrived in this strange place rushing back to his mind. "... I get it. You're sort of like Ai, huh?" He grinned a bit, but it was a little dismissive; he waved his hand to accentuate the message of the look and turned away to continue on down the path. "Whatever. Do what you want, I don't really care. If you're going to follow me, don't come along with my image, I don't want to talk to something that looks like me."

It had changed back to its true self behind him, he could tell. He smirked and started walking, saying flippantly over his shoulder, "Maybe you can make Red Boxes for me, since I can't. We can take them home to Ai, even if right now they're not any use to me, right? What did you say earlier- Ditto? That can be your name, I'm too lazy to think of anything else, and if I'm not XI here then there's no point in calling you Ai."

So he continued on down the path, chattering and completely distracted from his other goals, his other thoughts - but still holding in his head, all the while, I'll find a way to change, and I'll kill the person that took that away from me. I'll be my real self, and no one will stop me.
