Max walked into Logan's apartment, tossing her jacket down and filling a syringe. She grabbed Logan's arm, and injected him with a powerful antigen. Finishing, Max backed up quickly, standing near the window, one foot up on a chair.
She heard a rustling, and turned around, watching as Logan sat up a little, putting on his glasses. "You don’t have to stand all the way over there. Come closer."
Max shook her head, taking her foot down and moving to where she'd dropped her jacket. "Better not risk it. We don’t know how easy it is for me to reinfect you, and that was the last of the antigen."
Logan sat up the rest of the way, looking at Max, hurt. "We’re gonna find a way to beat this."
Max sighed, looking anywhere but at Logan. "Yeah. But you should concentrate on getting better. I gotta go."
Logan looked up at her sharply, surprised. "You know, things are different now. Back when you first got out, it was just the twelve of you. Now there’s a lot more."
Max shrugged. "If they’re smart, they’ll lay low."
Logan leaned back against the couch, defeated. "You don’t want it getting around that you and yours are out in the world. People tend to get scared of things that are different. Keep your head down."
Max opened the door to the apartment. "I always do." She stepped out, closing the door behind her. Logan simply watched her leave.
Walking out onto the street, Max threw a leg over her motorcycle, started the engine, and drove off, taking in the whole city as she left.
Funny how from here, it looks like nothing’s changed. Only everything’s changed. Not just me and Logan, everything. The whole time I was at Manticore, all I wanted was my strange little life back. Never figured it could get any stranger. But I guess it’s gonna. And I guess I’m just gonna have to deal with it... Or run.
