Stupid Farm BoyAzrael Zero was the biggest, baddest boy in the neighborhood. You could tell just by the swaggering way he walked, and the preening way he flipped his back with two fingers. All the boys were eager to be his cronies, while the girls swooned when he smirked at them.

Then he moved into the city. Stupid farm boy.

Suddenly he was no longer the top dog. When he pushed down little Adora McCullough, no one laughed. At least not until Zero had hit the dirt with a bloody nose, and the blonde girl was smiling at her savior, Wyatt Cain.

Lessons Learned
The boy was quick to learn the facts of life. Keep your head down and let life run you over and you might as well off yourself right then. Life demanded that you never back down, that you attack those who are weaker so that they could not get stronger. Gather subservient men around you and attack as a pack to take down an equal opponent.

His father taught him that lesson, in blood and bruises.

But the last laugh was Zero’s, when his boot firmly planted itself in the older man’s side. He had taught him too well, fool.

Twisting Love

Contrary to popular belief, Zero never hated his mother. In reality he had loved her with every fiber of his tiny being when he had been a child. She had been beautiful, ethereal, a goddess of sweet laughter, kisses and hugs for her son.

When she left him behind, forced to flee from their home rather than let herself be killed by his father, he had turned his heart to stone. That bone deep, heart wrenching betrayal hurt too much. He never wanted to feel that agony again. Never again would anyone get to his heart. He wouldn’t let them.
