So, we're due to send in a check to the insurance company for our cars. We open up the envelope. We are being insured for our Relay, and the '94 Eagle Summit that I traded in back in November to buy my new car. This is after they had screwed up on the insurance for the Relay, so our Saturn guy Jim had been on the phone with them for a few hours trying to verify that I was justly insured. They had even sent me the insurance card to carry around.
So, I get on the phone with them. Apparently, even though the request was made, it was never processed. So now, I'm sitting here, 7 days before our insurance runs out, with no new card to carry in my car. Guy on the phone says that he'll send me a new card (I'm hoping he does), and they'll send a new bill but to pay the one we have now.
As I'm looking over all the information while I'm on hold, I notice something on the insurance card I have. It's listed as a "Temporary" card, effective 3/08/05. With the small print stating that it expires sixty days after the effective date. That's 5/07/05, for those keeping track. Now, I got this car on 11/30/05, meaning that my insurance card had been expired for 207 days when I got the car; probably more like 220 or so when I got the card itself. So, apparently I've been driving without a valid insurance card for the last 3 months.
Supposedly Geico does homeowner's insurance too. I think I'm going to check that out--anyone know what kind of penalties or such one accrues if you cancel a policy midway through the period?
