I've got 5 units in my Undergrad to go, and I've just enrolled. Second semester next year is going to be kind of terrible and I forsee being a bit hermitish as I'm doing 3 units, but I can't bear to stretch it out further. I'm so close I can taste it and I want it done.
These are the units coming up for me, and the combination of them includes 1 elective, 1 unit that will represent a core unit they closed down and the other 3 will complete a minor in Mass Communications. I'm content with the way this has happened, even if I wish it could have been Public Relations instead.
Semester 1:
Media Audiences and the Public This unit considers the contemporary media environment for audiences in terms of historical and newly developing traditions of audience analysis. It also examines theories that inform public and political communication, focusing specifically on the media-public dynamic. The unit draws on several disciplines, including mass communication, media studies, psychology, consumer behaviour, public opinion and cultural studies. The unit provides practical knowledge about how media audiences and publics are measured and develops basic proficiency in the practical skills of audience research.
Professional Communication This unit teaches students theoretical foundations and practical skills in professional communication. Students critically analyse different modes and genres of communication including public information, rhetorical communication, organisational communication and interpersonal communication. Students will gain skills in planning strategic communication, writing and delivering speeches, integrating visual communication in written work, writing reports, editing written material, conducting interviews and managing professional communication projects.
Semester 2
Power, Security and Modern Life This unit explores understandings of 'power' and 'governance' in sociological thought, tracking changes from the classical period to the present. The impact of political and professional interventions on individual subjectivity and social relations is discussed in detail with reference to subjects such as health, mental health, crime, welfare, education, ethnicity and sexuality. The themes which underlie the unit include knowledge, power, governance, subjectivity and contestation.
Media and Globalisation This unit surveys contemporary issues arising from the internationalisation of mass communication. It introduces key theories of globalisation, corporation, concentration and conglomeration, convergence, and media/cultural imperialism. Students will undertake case studies that examine a range of topics including the advent of 24/7 news and development of regional/global media hubs. Students will be tasked to think critically about the global mediascape and develop a deeper understanding of the rapidly changing media and creative industries around the world.
New Media Technologies This unit teaches students how to describe and evaluate changes to communication technology and media. Students will be exposed to pivotal studies in new media, and will gain practical skills in detailing changes to the Web, explaining the historical, cultural and social factors affecting mobile media, exploring collaborative media, and critically appraising the effects of new media on culture and user psychology.
At the end of this I'll have a BA in Gender and Cultural Studies, with minors in Ethics and Mass Communication. I'm looking forward to that *so* much.
