I had a conversation yesterday with one of my dearest and closest friends, who has recently been thinking on the fact that in amongst a group of women, the association of 'mean, nasty' and other such things is placed on tactics and strategies used in boardgames.
This was demonstrated to me while we played Backgammon yesterday. She pointed out that at certain times I was commenting on things she was doing that were of a good tactical nature as being 'mean' or 'nasty' at times - and when queried on it, we discussed it, or rather I listened as she detailed her recent thoughts on it.
It basically centred on the the push for women to be 'nice' and not to be 'mean', and that this really shouldn't impact on game playing or other similar things at all - that following the rules within the prescription of the game, can't actually be described as 'mean' or 'nasty' or 'ruthless' or anything like that - but is in fact good tactics, or strategy or similar associations.
Even after this initial discussion (which I don't feel I've done justice btw), I still fell into doing it a number of times... Once again I'm awed by the insidious nature of social programming.
