Right, then. I thought we could take care of this in house, but seeing as things are getting a bit out of hand, I guess I better address this to everybody.
By now, I'm sure everybody knows about what happened in Medbay just before the end of the latest crisis. In specific, that a damaged coupling in the Medbay power systems failed when a routine diagnostic placed greater strain on an already labored system. This led to a catastrophic failure of the coupling and caused the power systems in the Medbay to fail.
Both Billy Cranston and I have looked into this situation carefully. We gathered our evidence and took our time and came to the conclusion that this was an unfortunate accident. The coupling had been reported months ago as damaged, but because the damage was insignificant at the time, it was judged to be low priority. And the coupling would have remained working under the demands at the time for a good while, but the additional strain of the diagnostic routine caused it to fail.
We are very lucky that nobody was injured during the outage and our apologies have been made in person to those affected. I would also like to assure everybody that we are changing the way we do some things here in the department. From now on, any report of damage to a system that directly affects critical systems such as the Medbay will get the highest priority. Yes, we should have done this before. It's our fault that it wasn't done earlier and we take that responsibility.
Also, diagnostics to these systems will be suspended during times of high usage to prevent a similar failure from occurring again. Again, this is effective immediately and should, with luck, keep this from happening a second time.
Again, I'd like to apologize for what happened and reassure that steps are being taken to prevent anything similar happening again. And I'd like to encourage anybody who has a problem with any of our staff members to not hesitate to approach either Billy or myself and we will take care of it. That is, after all, part of our job.
