Meet-n-Greet

After being released from stasis, having the slime removed from their bodies and clothed in the creepy, pulsing leaf-suit that everyone wore, and being taken to the Weapons & Possessions lockers to collect their belongings, the new arrivals would find themselves standing in the Observation Deck. Round windows lined the fleshy walls, revealing the ( Read more... )

Walking without paying much attention, Luna runs one hand over the odd material covering her midriff (and the rest of her), her other hand occupied with slipping the posts of her radish earrings into her lobes. They had been the only things in her Locker, wand and Spectrespecs aside. The long strip of wood is tucked safely behind her ear, and her fingers continue to prod and pinch the pulsing plantsuit.

"How odd," she murmurs, footsteps halting completely as she finds one of the veins and presses a thin finger to it. The pulse is exactly like her own as she has felt it since Hermione taught her how to feel it, and she blinks slowly for a moment, wondering if the suit has a heartbeat or something along those lines.

Her eyes lift eventually, and her head cants to the side, protuberant eyes scanning the room carefully. She still looks nothing more than intrigued, though she registers that everyone else seems rather put-out.

Katara was more than a little put out, but that doesn't mean she won;t talk to people and act friendly. She figured somebody had to be here longer than today, and finding them would come soon. First off though, she wanted to know a little more about the similarities they all shared. After all, they were chosen. Why?

The first girl that caught her eye was one that look rather peculiar to her: strange kind of fruit was hanging off her ear, a piece of wood tucked behind her ear, and she was fooling around with the weird suit she had. The hair was what caught her eye though: it was yellow and to Katara, very pretty considering she didn't really see people with that kind of hair in her travels.

"Oh, hi," she said, looking a little sheepish. "So...I guess you just arrived too, huh? I'm Katara, of the Southern Water Tribe. Who are you?"

Luna focuses on Katara, still looking little more than mildly interested with the whole situation. Truth be told, she's actually a little sad to be here. Stacy had interrupted the birthday party she had been holding for Harry. Of course, she had been the only one at the party, but it was the thought that counted. She spares a forlorn thought for the half-finished painting of Harry she had been doing when the world had lurched and she had woken up covered in that intriguing, rather unpleasant goo.

"Oh, hello. I'm Luna Lovegood. I'm a Ravenclaw. It's very nice to meet you," she says in her dreamy voice. "I suppose you could say that I just arrived," she adds after a moment, and it's unclear what she means by 'I suppose'; she did just arrive, and that's all there is to it.

Katara had to admit, this girl had her mystified. Shed never seem a girl this calm since Tai Lee, although Tai Lee had nothing on this...Luna, was it? The girl seemed to dress and act in a fashion that wasn't quite in accordance with her surroundings, not that it was saying much considering the situation. She was weird but fascinating, and Katara had to admit despite herself that she wanted to learn a bit more. When was the next time she'd be abducted by aliens anyway?

"You have two names? That's interesting. Where I'm from we usually have one. It's nice to meet you too. So I guess you're as confused as I am."

She wanted to ask about her hair, but stopped, and instead asked another probing question. "What's a Ravenclaw?"

Luna, meanwhile, seems to have found a fondness for Katara's skin, though all she is doing is staring at a spot on her cheek. "Your skin looks so soft. You know, most of the girls where I come from would talk about you for a week behind your back if they saw you with such nice skin." She blinks at the mention of her second name, and Luna actually looks... a little startled, not an expression this familiar to her facial muscles. "That's interesting. How do you differentiate your nuclear family from the rest of the world, then?"

Something close to a frown lingers between her eyebrows for a moment, though she quickly eases back into her usual state of visible tranquility. "I'm not really confused, actually. Are you?" She wonders vaguely why she is starting to feel uneasy; she muses that it probably has something to do with the obvious difference between herself and Katara. Yes, she's used to being different, but not this different. Being from another world serves to obliterate a little slice of her calmitude. Unconsciously, ( ... )

Katara blushed a little. She was used to people thinking she was a peasant, since the Southern Watertribe kept to themselves for obvious reasons. "Well, I do use a little mud treatment for that," She recalls, remembering Toph suddenly, "but it also might be because I live in the South pole, I'm not sure. Um, I don't know what the word nuclear means, but honestly, there are so few of us in the South thanks to a war, we hardly confuse each other." Vaguely Katara wondered why girls would have a problem with her having nice skin, but figured girls were always mean and jealous of each other no matter WHAT world they were from ( ... )

Luna nods politely, thinking vaguely that she ought to have wonderful skin if all one needs is mud. All of that plimpie fishing has given her enough mud on her face to last a lifetime. "That makes sense, I suppose," she says abruptly after a long silence. "Having a small group of people would make it easier."

"Spaceship?" She looks a bit confused, now, eyes wider than usual. "What's a spaceship?" It seems that she missed the news that she's on a spaceship, and a live one at that. "And anyway, familiarity is rare in new experiences, isn't it? Not knowing what's going on makes it more exciting."

"Oh, are you a Muggle then? They do exist. A lot of them aren't that fun, though." A pause. "What do women in your world bend? Is it a form of art?"

Her fingers twitch slightly and loosen, and she lifts her wand, habitually pointing it away from Katara; she's used to people being threatened by having wands pointed at them. "Yes, it's a wand. There's not need to apologize, either. Everyone is curious sometimes."

Katara sighed. "It wasn't something we chose. Like I said, after the war there weren't as many of us around. It was easier, but not necessarily an experience you want to live through. Some of us lost a lot of the people we cared about." Katara paused, trying not Luna. "I never thought why we are all given one name though. I guess you could say that it is pretty strange ( ... )

Luna nods, watching Katara's expressions flit across her face. She catches some hint of personal pain at her comment about losing people, and Luna's eyes shine oddly. She can sympathize with the waterbender on that point. "Losing people is painful," she says without much of a prompt, going almost entirely off-topic. This is a skill she has, though, going off-topic, and she feels a need to share with Katara, even if it is only a whim. "I lost my mother when I was nine. One of her spells went wrong. It was awful." She pauses, blinks. "Strangeness is relative, anyway. I think it's strange, but I'm not from your world where it's probably very ordinary ( ... )

If there were a subject that Katara tried to stay away from, it was mothers. Still, Luna was able to talk about her mom dying, and that was unexpectedly something they had in common. "My mom was killed too," Katara said. "In my world, we had to fight off the Fire Nation because they want to control everything. They kept coming to the Southern Water Tribe to take away all the waterbenders. To protect me, mom said she was the last one. I'm the only Southern Waterbender left ( ... )

Luna listens, her eyes quiet and warm even as her face remains the same. Strange though she may be, she has a thing for comforting people, and sometimes getting them to share a little bit helps more than other things. Her nod is slow, considerate. "She sounds like a strong woman," she says, watching Katara for a long moment. "Mine didn't do anything near that heroic," she murmurs aimlessly, eyes shifting to the wall opposite them, regaining their dreaminess ( ... )

Katara smiled. "It doesn't matter about that. What matters is that we both love our mothers, right? If anything, I'd say you were lucky. Your mom lived in a time where there wasn't so bad of a war. Honestly, heroism may look really amazing and inspirational to people, but to those who live through it, it can be pretty painful too. I think if you have peaceful times, you have more of a reason to cherish it ( ... )

"Of course. The fact that she died in a time when He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was dormant is a sort of honor. I was just saying that her death was so much an accident that it was actually rather sad, though to die in the line of one's work is also good." She muses silently, twirling a piece of hair around her index finger. "Heroism is lovely and all, but knowledge is better than rash action. That's why I like being a Ravenclaw so much. 'Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure', after all ( ... )

Katara stirred a little. She had no idea what kind of person was He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, but the feeling was understood: it was that feeling her nation had every time the ashes fell, and the steamships were on the horizons. She suddenly was happy she decided to talk to Luna. She was sure people thought her odd: she chose her words carefully, and they weren't what people always understood. But Katara could see that there was a lot of sensibility in a girl like this, in her own way: who wouldn't be drawn to that, even admire it ( ... )

The feeling she got was most definitely correct. Though usually detached from a lot of things going on in the wider scope of things, Luna grasps how unfortunate it is that she exists in a time when He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is making such a powerful comeback. Though Hogwarts is the safest place she could be, she somehow feels that being in the process of learning when such things are happening isn't quite the best idea; already knowing it all would be better, as it would give her and everyone else she holds dear a better chance for surviving. Losing one person has taught her that the hole they leave behind hurts, and she is much discinclined to have more holes in her heart ( ... )

Katara wished she knew what Luna was thinking, as she was silent for a little while, but that was OK. Considering the situation, getting lost in thought was more than forgivable, it was necessary. Besides, it hadn't escaped Katara that Luna might be a thinker to begin with, if she came from a house whose best feature was using your brains. She imagined Sokka would like to be in a house like that, he seemed to push on the idea of rationality and logic over everything. Of course, he'd never think quite like Luna, which was fine . It suited her well.

At the mention of a boy named Harry, Katara got the impression he was something of a big deal. OK, now their similarities were getting downright eerie. Still, it was good to be sure.

"Who is Harry? What's he to you?"
