Far below the rolling tide [Open]

Strangely enough, even after the events of the past few days, Zouichi had not developed an aversion to the ocean. Or axes! Or giant squid! It helped that he, unlike some of the other crew, hadn't been in imminent danger of drowning. He was, however, busying himself with preparing some of the food they'd bought on shore leave, as well as supplies ( Read more... )

Kais drew in a deep breath through his mouth. The humorous thing about not having a nose meant that all the smell receptors chilled out inside his mouth.

Either way, it smelled like seafood. Not that he had any experience with that smell since he was completely used to eating rations. But he knew what it was and curiosity drove him a little further onward.

Yep, he couldn't help but take a peek.

Zouichi thought he heard something, and looked up. "Someone out there? You can just come on in if you want; my hands are full right now."

Kais, you needed to live a little.

He is living! Kais shows all the signs of being a life form, therefore, he is living.

But he does step in since he was told to. His eyes jump straight to the food in curiosity.

"Greetings."

Zouichi put down the piece of shrimp he was working on, raising a hand briefly to Kais in greeting. "Hey. Is there any particular reason for this visit? Or are you just dropping in?"

Not that it mattered much. He motioned to a plate of tenpura on the counter. "Have a seat if you want. I just made those, so they'll be hotter."

"I am just exploring while I have the chance to."

He looks down at the plate and back up at Zouichi silently. As if finally deciding, he pulls out a chair and awkwardly grabs a seat.

"Hotter? What are they?"

"Shrimp tenpura. You're not allergic to anything, are you?" It's kind of hard to tell what an alien will be able to tolerate and what he won't.

"It's a kind of sea invertebrate covered in batter."

"Not that I am aware of..."

He stared at it, wondering what nutritional value it would have. Probably nothing exceptionally beneficial, considering how it looked.

"I will take a bite of it."

"Glad to hear it. There's some sauce on the side." Zouichi went back to cooking the next batch, careful not to spatter the oil.

"So how has the ship been treating you?"

Kais preferred to try it without the sauce first. Taking a bite, he made a face while chewing it. No telling if it was a good face or a bad face yet.

"It is treating me the way a ship would treat anyone else."

"It's an expression. Basically, 'how are you?' You seemed a little lost when you first got here."

An impressive face indeed, Kais.

"Why not say that then?"

Human colloquialisms go right over his head. At least he took another bite of the shrimp.

"Probably because there are different levels of familiarity with which humans speak to each other. For example, colloquialisms are generally used to speak to those with whom one is more at ease. More formal speech is reserved for situations requiring more decorum."

He picked up another piece of shrimp. "Besides, I think they get bored and think up new ways to say things."

"Wouldn't that make things more difficult?"

Sounds like another reason to join the Greater Good and why humans were definitely swarming to the cause (propaganda).

"There's a lot about language that's difficult. But that's just what happens when it's used by so many people. It goes through changes, mutations. But it doesn't mean learning isn't worthwhile."

Zouichi didn't even know what the Greater Good was, to be honest.

"Why not attempt to learn a new language like T'au?"

A shame, Zouichi, a shame. The Ethereals would not be pleased.

"Why don't the T'au learn other languages?" They weren't one of those assholes, were they? 'Speak T'au'?
