Grocery shopping!zouichiJanuary 8 2012, 18:13:06 UTC
Zouichi had been itching for the opportunity to get his hands on some cooking ingredients for a while now. So one of the first places he went was the shopping district. There he could be found collecting an ever growing amount of supplies. One thing he was interested in in particular was the fish market -- surely an area so close to the ocean would have an excellent catch to choose from. It was clearly time for some stews and homemade sushi and sashimi.

Running a restaurant meant that you had to keep the shelves stocked with new stuff, and right now, Mindy was making sure she did just that. Alien meat burgers were ok, but she knew that she wasn't going to get any better just cooking stuff she already knew. So she was off to get more food when she ran into a familiar face.
"Zouichi, hey!" She greeted him, looking over what he got, "Do you actually know how to cook this stuff?"
Re: Grocery shopping!zouichiJanuary 8 2012, 19:39:22 UTC
He turned, smiled a little. "Yes. I learned some cooking before I came to the ship, and I've been practicing ever since. We just don't usually get too many ingredients, is all. I thought it would be a good time to stock up." In fact, he'd probably make a couple of trips here, and make good use of Howard's roller fridge. Luckily, baking supplies like flour usually kept pretty well.
A man with a large, flopping silvery fish was in the middle of putting it into a display tank; Zouichi stopped him before he could. "Excuse me, could I have that one? Blood drained, please."
Re: Grocery shopping!hit_girl_mindyJanuary 8 2012, 19:46:57 UTC
"Um, could I ask a favor? I'm sorta running the old cafe that Sasami started since she's gone, and I'm kinda trying to branch out in terms of what I make, you know? I was, like, the meat cooker when it came down to it, and now I'm sorta trying to cover bases. Fish is a different animal to me completely, and I'd like to be able to cook it for the people who want it, you know?"
So what she was basically asking was if you'd teach her how to cook it, without saying it in so many words.
Blood drained? "Why do you want the fish drained?"
Re: Grocery shopping!zouichiJanuary 8 2012, 20:17:03 UTC
The man nodded and, after settling on a price, took the fish in back to be prepared. In the meantime, Zouichi listened to Mindy's story. "I was wondering what was going to happen to that place. If you'd like, I could try and give you some pointers. There's an awful lot of ways to prepare a fish, though."
The man returned with the fish in an ice box; Zouichi paid him and hefted the box aloft. "It's because fish develop a unique flavor depending on what they eat and the waters they swim in. If you kill them quickly and drain their blood in a certain way, it helps preserve that flavor." He started walking again, making his way slowly down the rows of open stalls.
"Some restaurants used to keep live fish in display cases before serving them, maybe for days or more. But if you keep them like that, they lose their taste. They're stressed out from being kept in unfamiliar surroundings, they're swimming around in water they're not used to, and they're being fed things that aren't usually in their diet."
Re: Grocery shopping!hit_girl_mindyJanuary 8 2012, 20:33:02 UTC
"Sasami and I were friends even if I teased her every once and awhile," Mindy said. "I didn't want it to be forgotten just because she got podded. So I decided to make sure it was kept alive, and cleaned after the stupid robot attack. I just changed the name."
She listened with rapt attention, trying to remember that for later. "I'd really appreciate it, actually. I'm going to be spending all the credit I have on getting groceries, so wanna make sure I have enough and know how to store it. Luckily the place has a freezer. It just needs some more care."
So manufactured fish. She was lucky he was around so she knew the difference. "This place looks like it gets them fresh though. We should be good, but I'll have the blood drained too."
Re: Grocery shopping!zouichiJanuary 8 2012, 22:15:04 UTC
Zouichi nodded. "I remember when she first talked about opening the place -- she was very excited about it. Although I admit I didn't really visit much." He didn't eat very often, after all.
"Perhaps what we can do is start with some simple dishes, like grilled fish and tempura, and work our way up." Zouichi eyed a display filled with shrimp. "Hopefully we'll be around for a little while. Do you have all the cooking utensils you need? Knives, pans, that sort of thing? I don't think I ever got to see the back kitchen."
He motioned toward the direction of... what was it? Icefish Pier? "I think this place offers chartered rides, too, if you ever wanted to catch your own fish. I might try it out, or just cast by the docks. Might as well make the most of the break."
Re: Grocery shopping!hit_girl_mindyJanuary 8 2012, 23:18:24 UTC
"I cooked for her when I could, but that was it," Mindy admitted. "I had some other things I had to do, and I couldn't be there as often as I liked. Now she's gone."
And she had to admit, it made her sad. When Chase disappeared, it was a downer, but when she found out about Sasami and Negi going away,s he had to actually go and work in the diner to stave off the depression.
She nodded. "Yeah, I did an inventory of the kitchen after the stupid robots were junked, and had to unearth stuff, but I found most of what I needed, and what I don't have I'm buying. So a place to catch your own fish huh? I better look into that."
Re: Grocery shopping!zouichiJanuary 9 2012, 00:39:33 UTC
Zouichi nodded. "Yeah. I'm... sorry." It was strange, talking about people who had been repodded like this. Like they'd gone on a trip somewhere or left, when really they were just in the Pod Caverns. But as recent events had demonstrated, podded didn't mean safe. "Are you going to run the place by yourself?"
If he remembered correctly, it had been a fairly significant setup to handle. Of course, Sasami hadn't kept it open all the time.
Re: Grocery shopping!hit_girl_mindyJanuary 9 2012, 02:23:13 UTC
"Just for now. If I can get people to help, we can do it in shifts, that way people don;t have to go all hungry. I'd hate to do it myself, but if I did, at least I'd be doing my part in making sure people on the ship didn't go hungry. That's something, even if I'm not the ball of Sunshine Sasami was."
What that really meant was that it was a perfect cover for Mindy: her civilian self runs the diner, her Hit Girl self did other things. Perfect!
Re: Grocery shopping!hit_girl_mindyJanuary 9 2012, 03:35:47 UTC
Mindy was very, VERY close to ranting about what she thought the ship "provided," but she was able to hold back just in time.
Fucking Stacy.
"A lot of people don't like what the ship provides, and anyway, I always figure testing out people's palates and getng them together to eat is a pretty good idea."
Re: Grocery shopping!zouichiJanuary 9 2012, 16:19:09 UTC
"True. But it's available, and there's the Sensoriums. I still think an eatery is a good idea, though. And people have started growing crops on the ship, too. So some ingredients should be available even outside of shore leaves."
Zouichi ended up taking several bunches of the green vegetables. "I wonder if there are any live fish sold here that could be put in the river."
Re: Grocery shopping!hit_girl_mindyJanuary 9 2012, 17:16:15 UTC
"Yeah, I've seen people in the Hydro bay growing stuff," Mindy said. "Actually, the apples I have are a product by that earth Applejack. Apparently she was trying to grow the stuff since she got here. It was worth the wait though, apples taste fantastic."
Oh yeah, veggies. She forgot about those. "Well, some corn should be good...and yeah, that's actually a good question. Maybe I'll go catch some. Worth a shot, and we can maybe have them breed and stuff."
Re: Grocery shopping!zouichiJanuary 9 2012, 17:24:55 UTC
Zouichi nodded. "It's worth looking into. At any rate, I think it's about time for me to start taking some of these things back to the ship. I'll be around later, once I've had a chance to drop off some supplies."
Actually, maybe he should look into renting a transport for some of this stuff.

He picked up a bunch of scallions, considering it. "Maybe she'll wake up again sometime." Then again, he'd never seen Alex since he'd been repodded.
