Research and Testing

1. Negi hadn't expected the spells to work out the first time around, especially when he was doing something as legitimately time consuming such as building a test broom for Cedric to try out later. He had obtained the materials easily enough, and had gone through as many spellbooks as possible on the creation of a flight-worthy broom ( Read more... )

"You seem a little lost, Negi-kun..."

Catching the ball as it bounced around, Sasami approached Negi, a worried look on her face. "Is something wrong?"

"Ah, Sasami. Just lost in thought I'd say," replied Negi, shaking his head.

"I've been working on a project for the last few days and I haven't figured out the correct ratio of spells to imbue into the broom yet."

"Correct ratio? You mean there's math to that sort of thing?" Sasami said, a little surprised at it.

"Most of the correct designing of spells involves linguistics, mathematics and other numerous factors," said Negi, tracing out a few formulas in the air with a finger. "The problem I'm having is that too much of one magic can out-do another, and then cause a failure in the spell matrix."

"Was that easy enough to follow?"

For a moment, Sasami's head spun with the various formula being written out. This was way more vast than she thought! But, at least he said it a lot better than what she was used to through Washu's speak.

"I think so, yeah..."

"Basically put, if I don't plan the spells out right, then it could wind up turning off at any moment." explained Negi. "And the last thing I want to do is submit a completed item and have it, well happen."

"I see... yeah, that would be a problem." Sasami said, nodding. Idly, she tossed the ball back to Negi as she started to think. "You ever try not going that way and just seeing what works? I mean, not everything needs to work on equations, right?"

"If it were that simple really. I want to make sure that it is both safe, and comfortable."

Negi tapped his chin thoughtfully. "I need to combine both of those, as well as a fairly standard flight spell."

"...maybe instead of trying to combine both of those, how about you combine one with the flight spell and use the other afterwards?" Sasami suggested. "You can't get both and expect the main part to work, right?"

"... There's an idea," said Negi, making a few swift mental calculations. "If I were to combine the wind barrier spell as well as the flight, then it should be able to compensate for the flight spell while in transit. The rest of it is placing a spell for comfort after that and a few extra things so that it doesn't shake itself to pieces when flying faster..."

"See? It was all a matter of readjusting!" Sasami said. "Though, I have to ask - why a broom?"

At that, Negi laughed and rubbed his head. "Cedric and the others are used to brooms. So I figured I'd make some of them."

"Cedr-- Oh! Some of the new people!" Sasami said, figuring it out. "Well, that was nice of you to do that for them!"

"Thanks! With any luck, I won't have to worry about the composition of the brooms till much longer." said Negi. "The aerodynamics need to be fine tuned after I get it flying."
