Target Practice

Since living in the new castle with Ruffnut, Mindy had done her best to maintain upkeep, even "borrowing" a few things from the wreckage of Grand Central to spruce up the place. It helped, especially since the events of the homecoming, to keep her head busy. On the one hand, yes, dad had appeared: he wasn't dead, he was proud to know they won, and ( Read more... )

"What? Ruff-"

"An interloper! Take her out!"

The words were out of one of the thugs mouth: Hit Girl didn't know which one. What she did know, however, was the intent once the words started: and now, without even thinking about it, she entered back into that mode where everything slowed down. If one could describe it, it was everything was in black and white, blurring together. Only for a fleeting moment did Hit girl think something was wrong with the Sensorium, and then she realized it was the Sensorium, but HER. It was pure intention that was making her move through regular time.

And, of course, that mattered less when her friend had the potential to get shot.

SLICE.

"Augh!" Hand went flying, and then Hit Girl was at the next guy, barreling through him with the butterfly knife, rolling to the ground and back up, glocks in hands. The words were at "...her out..." when the bullets started to fire, and the men were getting pumped full, not quite understanding hwo they couldn't see her. Five. Seven. Ten.

Duck.

Hit Girl dove on the floor and time was starting to speed up, but only because she was loading her guns and off she went again, the body count to seventeen before she got close enough to Ruff to knock her to the floor, right behind the bar.

Twenty down, twenty left. Hit Girl's heart was thumping mad in her chest, her shoulder was scraped to shit and there was an endless barrage of gun fire behind them.

And she was grinning her head off, despite it all.

"Dude, I don't know how, but you just inspired me to do something I didn't even do on the mission. Now go take out some of those guys!"

Ruff blinked a few times confused by what had just happened and shrugged it off lighting up her fists with electricity lunging into combat alongside her friend, punching and throwing projected enemies like a whirlwind pain.

Even if she didn't really understand what Mindy had done, she did understand that this was fun. The feeling of superiority over larger men with weapons.

It was pandemonium. The thugs could still not believe she had taken so many out in a mere thirty seconds without them getting so much of a hint of where she was. One moment she was spiraling in the air, the next she was underfoot, shooting off ankles and already striding outside their circle in mere seconds. But this was no Sensorium miracle, no magical thing that was making everything work: this was Mindy's own strength, and this was her limit all over again.

"Ruff, get those guys up on the steps before they bear down on you hard!" She yelled, firing her guns into the last few groups of them.

Ruff let out a grunt of agreement and picked up one of the fallen thugs by his feet swinging him through the air round and round before hurling him bodily at her targets on the stairs knocking several of them down. "HA!"

Hit Girl was already getting into the groove of taking these guys out: they were totally doomed. With the last group she landed in the middle of them with a sharp THUD, and in her hand was Zetta's gun, which she had already been charging. The other gun in her hand, the thugs had a moment of a widening eyes before Hit Girl let loose with her final move, a beam that exploded all of the guys around her, and that was all she wrote. They were incinerated, and the only ones left were Ruffnut's guys, who were likely scared shitless now.

Ruff grinned wild eyed and excited at the massive power Mindy put out. It almost distracted her from her own share of the targets. She turned back and gave them a glare. "Boo!"

The thugs screamed and scrambled to escape.

At the point, they would have been stupid to stick around. Hit girl may have been breathing hard, but that did not mean that she was going to sit and rest for a moment if she thought they were going to go and try something. She grinned, then turned to Ruffnut, walking over and, caring little about her usual bad assery, giving the viking a hug.

"Dude! This is only the second time I did this, and I didn't even do it the first time this damn awesome! I've been trying to do it again all day! I don't know why, but when I thought those fucks were gunning for you, I went all crazy shit on them! Thanks! Man, wait until I tell Zetta! This is so sweet!"

You could forget about Hit girl feeling awkward about this she was practically jumping up and down right now, and beaming at her partner.

Ruff grinned right back a crooked wild eye'd grin, "You'll get it sooner or later, you're like the smartest strongest kid I've met that wasn't ya know, me." pride thy name is Ruffnut.

The praise was too much she actually picked Ruffnut up and threw her in the air, making a shout of joy before colliding with her, laughing. Gone was the much abused saloon and they were rolling around in that spot Ruffnut had shown her, right above the cliff. She had taken off the wig a moment, blood still flecked on her uniform, grinning away.

"Thanks for coming in: I probably wouldn't have even done it if you hadn't shown up! I dunno, when you're around, I just feel like we can do anything, and if I'm backing you up, I'll kill anyone that gets close to killing you."

THAT was true devotion, and she had to make sure she never repeated that aloud again.

She let out a yell and laughed as she was tossed through the air spinning wildly to crash into the grass on the cliffside.

"I didn't do jack it was all you!" She insisted riding on Mindy's delight and joy at her successful fight.

"And I'll kill anyone who gets close to killing you." She gave a thumbs up as if sealing the deal.

People would likely have been freaked to see the two of the like this, if only because moments before, Hit Girl was so ruthlessly hacking and shooting herself through mobs of very dangerous guys. Aside from the blood, there seemed to be no trace of that girl here now, just two good friends full of energy and victory at their latest feat. Mindy didn't even have to go check to see if Ruffnut was all right: she knew that she was.

"Nah dude, you helped: I told you, I was doing this all day. Even when I was totally slicing up dudes with this other cool guy, I wasn't close to being that fast. I think we feed off each other's energy or something. That's pretty cool, but you know Zetta is just going to yell at us for being friendly all over again."

Without thinking about it, and probably because it was a little unexpected. Mindy did slightly turn red, then chuckled to herself. "Yeah, well knowing your luck you'd probably bash your head in a rock. But...thanks, for saying that. I'd definitely watch your back, any day."

She smiled, and now they magically had beer brews in their hands. "Here's to never being side characters."

"Screw that." She laughed clinking her mug to Mindy's and taking a hearty drink.

"All things considered the end of the world isn't as bad as you'd think, I mean after all, I met you right? And Zetta and Lash, we get to fight cool things, I can live up to my family name too. With this she spat out a bolt of lightning to prove her point.

The drink was nowhere near as satisfying as something at Kang's (although it did lack the dizzying effect after having to much) but it felt good to at least be able to bathe in this victorious moment with her best friend on the ship.

"Yeah well, speaking of family, I saw mine pretty recently. It was only for a day and everything, but it was good: I mean, now I know that Stacy CAN bring some people back from the dead. Dad was totally proud of all that I was able to do so far. It;s just too bad you weren't around: I think you would have liked him, you know?"

She took a swig, looking out into the distance a moment. "If he could only have seen me moving with that speed..."

"Duuuude." Ruff's eyes boggled at the idea that Stacy could bring back the dead. She knew how important Mindy's father was to her so even the typically goofy viking knew it was a big deal.

"Wow that's...I mean wow. What did you do when you saw him? Did it totally freak you out?"

"It threw me off, yeah, but I was too happy to freak out. I just missed him so much, you know? The last time I saw him he was burned alive and dying, so...I need to talk to him about everything that happened that day, what we did and all. A part of me...a part of me still wishes a little that he was here, so I could show him everything that's happened since, how strong I am."

She sighed. "But I guess I also know why that wouldn't work too."

"Whattya talking about?" Ruff threw her hands in the air in confusion, "He'd love to be here and see all the cool stuff you could do. I mean...you and I do really awesome together but if he was here I bet you'd be even MORE of an ass kicker. You guys did everything together right? So why wouldn't it work?"
