[open] ☥ the world is just illusion trying to change you

Mulder was pretty certain that no matter how long he stayed here, there was going to be no getting acclimated to the fact that he was living out his wildest fantasies, even when those fantasies were sobered by the conditions that had led to his being on this ship in the first place.  If there was one thing that defined him, it was his will to ( Read more... )

"Impressive, isn't it?" Soren asked, coming up behind Mulder. "A false sky, complete with sunlight. This city is apparently the size of a small island. Or so I've been told."

"You don't seem very put out for a man whose world has been destroyed."

Mulder was surprised by the familiarity of the voice. He hadn't really run back into any of the same people very much, considering how many were on board this thing.

"Let's just say we're in the middle of my life's work." He racked his brain for a name but came up empty. "I don't think we officially got introduced in the middle of exchanging life stories upon waking up naked from alien pods." Mulder thrust out a hand. "Fox Mulder."

Soren raised an eyebrow, but he'd finally figured out what people wanted when they kept shoving their hands at him. He returned the handshake.

"Soren. Pleased to meet you, Fox Mulder." He paused. "You say this is your life's work? Saving the world? I thought it was disseminating the truth."

Mulder dismissed the misinterpretation with a shake of the head, turning his attention towards a nearby building that even looked as alien as the walls on the main halls of the ship.

"Investigating life on other worlds. The idea of alien lifeforms, friendly or otherwise."

"Ah. Most of the crew members I've met so far haven't been too far removed from the species I'm familiar with. The dragons, for instance. And it's not as though I've never seen intelligent felines before. Do you come from a world of mostly beorc?"

"I'd answer that if I were familiar with what you mean by 'beorc'. And I wasn't talking about the crew itself, although some of them definitely qualify..."

Oh, that was right. The beorc on this ship called themselves --

"Human. Where I come from, there is more than one species that lays claim to that name."

"At any rate, it appears we make contact with foreign species on a fairly regular basis. I'm sure you'll get your chance to investigate their cultures and histories, should you ever become tired of what this vessel has to offer."

"Various species? What traits differentiate them?" He couldn't help but ask. The variety of humanoid species roaming around that weren't quite human was astonishing, and the fact that there were those who identified as human who weren't from Earth, well...

"I'm pretty damn sure getting bored is the least of my worries here, to be honest."

Soren paused. "We generally divide ourselves into beorc and laguz. The beorc are what you would no doubt refer to as 'human'. The laguz tend to have animalistic traits in addition to human ones."

"But the biggest difference is that they can change forms, from human to animal. Physically, their abilities often far outstrip the average beorc, although there are exceptions."

"Island of Dr. Moreau, huh?" He chuckled a bit, though he was sure that reference would be lost. "Or is this natural somehow? Some kind of... evolutionary mutation?"
