Meat n' Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings. New crew-mates might see ( Read more... )

Nanaki was used to humans, used to the way many looked at him strangely. And there were tons more out here, outside of those pod-lined chambers.

He stayed quiet - a single, amber eye scanning the crowd. Maybe he was hoping to see a familiar face, but he was also trying to figure out just how many people were aboard this strange, living ship. He wondered who to speak to first ... were these the other 'chosen ones'?

At least he felt a little more comfortable, after finding some of his belongings on the way up. The gift his grandfather had given him before passing, returning to the planet, and a few orbs of Materia that would be more than helpful, he thought.

With a quick (maybe nervous) flick of his flamed tail, Nanaki began to move, looking up to the others, and trying to catch the eyes of anybody who seemed approachable.

Soren took one step forward -- and almost dropped one of his spell tomes. A red... lion of some sort?

"Hold!" His voice was raised almost to a shout in order to rise above the din of the others. "You there. Who do you serve?"

If it was a Feral One, Soren would put it down here and now.

Nanaki winced slightly at Soren's voice. Was there really a reason for him to be so rude and demanding? Though, he figured, he probably expected him to be some sort of wild animal about to attack the crew. He sighed inwardly, and shook his head.

"I do not serve anyone, mister," Nanaki spoke back, gazing up at him. "Why?"

Soren snapped open his tome at the creature's response. Its response meant that it was not feral -- but then again, he'd never seen a laguz capable of speech in its animal form, either. And its answer was most unhelpful.

"You are a red lion," he said sharply. Beast-men, always needing that extra step just to answer a simple question. "Are you a subject of King Caineghis? A member of the Laguz Alliance?"

Nanaki took a few defensive steps back, suddenly really happy that his weapon and Materia were there with him. His eye narrowed, his teeth bared every so slightly before he spoke. He was ready to attack, but Nanaki didn't even want to fight! He really hoped this guy would calm down, the things Soren spoke about, he didn't even know what any of them were.

And he figured he'd answer the more important parts first. What this human saw him as, as wrong as he was, was not the bigger problem, here.

"I don't know who or what those things are! Is this how you greet everybody who doesn't stand on two legs like you?"

Soren stood ready -- but he didn't attack. Ike would not approve.

"You don't know of the Laguz Alliance?" Soren stared at Nanaki, disbelieving. Any member of the Beast Tribe that wasn't aware of the war must have been living under a rock. "Are you a laguz?"

...To be fair, this was how he greeted some laguz. Especially in unfamiliar circumstances.

He shook his head. "I don't. And I'm not a ... laguz, either."

Soren lowered his tome -- slightly, since whatever this creature was, it was still a large, likely carnivorous beast.

"...I am Soren, of the Greil Mercenaries. I must have mistaken you for someone else."

It was kind of an apology!

And Nanaki could work with not so but maybe sort of apologies. As long as he wasn't feeling as thought he were in danger anymore. Still, he was a little hesitant - this wasn't the most comfortable of first meetings.

"I am Nanaki, of Cosmo Canyon."

Most meetings with Soren weren't very comfortable. and that's why he had like no friends ever

"Cosmo Canyon. I have never heard of it. I am from the Tellius continent. Am I to understand that you are from a different 'world'?"

sonofthewarrior July 1 2011, 18:38:58 UTC
And Nanaki had never heard of Tellius, either. His head tilted to the side.

"You mean, another planet?"

"I am... not sure," Soren admitted. "The voice from before, the one that spoke in my mind... it mentioned other worlds. I only know of the one in which I was born."

Then his voice hardened. "And that world was in grave danger before I was brought here. I can only hope enough were left behind to ensure its safety."

"I am only familiar with the planet I was born and raised on, as well."

Nanaki's planet had faced many as danger as well. Even though they had fought so hard to save it, they did so with the knowledge that one day, every planet would meet its demise. Their lives were not different than any other lives. It unsettled him when he heard that the Ohm were 'destroyers of worlds' - did that mean his planet was in danger, too? He didn't want to think of the other possibility that presented itself with that thought.

"Perhaps it would be wise to speak to those who have awakened before us. It may wield better results than asking others who they serve before the fact."

And where Soren came from, almost all of the known population had been turned to stone by a goddess who thought fighting was meanbad.

Was that a dig, Nanaki? Luckily, Soren's willing to let that one go. He's so magnanimous, look at him! ...okay, maybe one small look of disapproval.

"You're right, of course. If you'll excuse me, I think I'll do just that."

Negi was in the crowd floating overhead and doing his customary scan for his students, telepathically reaching out via card. Finding none at the moment, he floated around, holding up Matt's old sign that read "Ask me Questions!"

He wasn't an official part of the council or anything, but any sign that had "Come to the dark side, we have cookies" on the backside was still appealing.

And there was somebody.

"Excuse me," Nanaki called up to Negi.
