"Going where I list, my own master total and absolute" (Part 2 - Diplomacy, Tourism, and Processing)

The trip down was uneventful. The view was gorgeous when the viewing window shields were raised again when they were through the atmosphere, especially as they passed down to Megalopolis, the simply-named giant city that was this world's capital. To the Earthlings there, the continents of this world would look vastly familiar, but that didn't mean ( Read more... )

Surrounded by a small cadre of armed guards, Asmin led her particular group down a sweeping, open boulevard, lined with trees and lights. Surrounding them on all sides were towering, graceful buildings, all it up, clean and looking as they might have been built yesterday. For all of that, there was still a healthy hustle and bustle of activity through the thoroughfares and byways of the city. Bridges of glass and steel stretched between buildings and the distant buzz of skybound vehicles was omnipresent. Just visible through the buildings was an elevated monorail and periodically, sleek bullet-like trains zipped past, crammed full of people ( ... )

Dustin had to admit: the city looked amazing. The guards didn't really bother Dustin as he just thought the were basic security people. He didn't really have much to add so he just gave a brief nod.

Lash was already bored.

No offense to the architecture of course, it was, by all aspects rather pretty and that fountain was sorta neat, but she'd been quietly fuming about the fact she hadn't been part of the main people who got to talk with the council. She totally could have been a good bodyguard! Totally! Man, been taken on a sight-seeing tour was almost really insulting for her fantastic talents.

But she didn't say that outloud, still wanting to keep one promise good and be nice as Dick had asked her to do. Or as good and nice as Lash could be, anyway. She looked over at the fountain again, rubbing her chin with one hand.

"Anti-gravity generators..." Maybe they were like an advanced version of those G-diffusers she had gotten from that Blue Falcon car.

Sakura stood next to Asmin, looking around in a mixture of wonder and understanding a basic need to build a mental map of the area. "It's breathtaking, Councilor Asmin," she agreed, when her attention was redirected to the fountain. "I've never seen anything like it. How centrally is everything located? Are these all shopping centers, or...?" she trailed off, inviting the older woman to speak.

The guards were curious. Sakura didn't expect an armed escort, regardless of how standard it might be on world. The uprising mentioned in the briefing must be more dangerous than they'd been led to believe. "Is it usually necessary to be this well attended when moving through the city?"

She scanned the crowds that moved around them, seeing occasional similarities. Flashes of light she found curious, if they weren't exactly like. Maybe body art was part of the technological curiosity of Galilee. "Are twins common in the Galileean population?"

Will just looked around, waiting. This place was definitely impressive, she'd give it that, but well, so far she hadn't really seen anything useful to know other than how they could possibly get water from the ground up high. Which wasn't that strange.

"These are a combination of shopping centers, offices... anything and everything needed for commerce," Asmin replied, a hint of pride in her voice as she turned to gesture at the surrounding buildings. If she noticed the boredom from some of their group, she didn't comment on it. "As for the guards...?"

She eyed her escort, almost as if she was seeing them for the first time. They were doing their best to look unobtrusive, although the stern looking men and women wearing excellently tailored clothing and giving everyone around them the evil eye weren't exactly blending in.

"The terrorist threat is rather serious, yes. However, I am hoping that you will see that all of this..." She gestured at the fountain, "Is worth defending from those who would tear down the foundations of our society. Everything we have worked for and built... this is an example of what the greatest minds of our civilization has to offer."

The question about twins earned a slightly blank look, "I suppose so, yes."

Dustin thought about Asmin's words for a moment. "It's not that unusual, I guess. Even on my world, there's always going to be people who want to cause trouble for those who are peaceful."

As she looked around, Sakura's words made Lash realize just how many twins there were here. Uncanny valley, she thought to herself. Maybe they had a lot more test-tube babies on this planet and that always increased the chances for multiple births. But Asmin didn't seem surprised by it, so perhaps it was just a normal thing for their world. It still felt like something was off.

As the woman continued to talk, the more mesmerizing the fountain looked to her. Lash slowly stepped up towards it as the others talked, watching the water flow defy gravity. Interesting in itself, but imagine what it could do for mechanics and...and maybe if she could properly understand how it worked she could...

Lash stuck her hand in the water.

In retrospect, a poor thought out idea in itself, but the wunderkind's curiosity could not be saturated that easily.

Now she paid the price for it.

"H-hey!" At first it was just her hand being sucked in, but in a flash Lash found herself in a zero gravity zone, pushed forward only by the water's movement and she was propelled into the air, right on top of the fountain. If she had been expecting it, she would have found it amazing, but right now she had been more preoccupied about the fact she had disobeyed orders to be good.

"Hey! Um can no one else tell Dick?" she yelled from the top, before letting herself slide down back to the ground. "I don't want to get into trouble."

Lash looked at the fountain again, glaring.

"Hey this is pretty fun!"

This might...take a while.

Sakura frowned, wondering what kind of fertility plan this planet had. Still, she was making an effort to be attentive and interested. Had this been more up her particular alley of interest she would have been genuinely curious, but architecture was a little overwhelming.

Or underwhelming. "What have your terrorists been targeting?" Terrorist was a strong word, one that had yet to really be used to describe what was going on. Sakura remembered her not-quite promise with Rory, to walk the line of neutrality. "How has this escalated to a degree where you're looking to open negotiations in order to address the threat to your society?"

... Sakura was a little too blunt to really be asking these sorts of delicate questions, but it was relevant to the mission, wasn't it?

And then Lash went up the fountain.

"... Let me apologize for my crewmate's antics, Councilor Asmin." Sakura strode over to the edge of the walkway, glaring up at Lash as she made her second rise to the top. "Lash! You idiot! This isn't the time for this!" She ( ... )

Will stared at the fountain, looking around and sighing. "You think you have something strong enough to keep Lash from running into it again when they eventually get down here?"

Really, that was just a complete waste of time. They had more important things to be worrying about, after all.

Asmin was just a blunt and frank in return, her mouth setting into a thin line. "Civilian and government targets. Police stations. Military barracks. Supply depots. Anywhere they think they can strike a blow, they can. Although casualties are, thankfully, limited due to our medical technology, the number of injured - and even dead - has been steadily rising. The problem lies in rooting out these rabble-"

She was interrupted mid-sentence by Lash's little escaped and her eyes widened for just a moment before they narrowed in a sharp, irritated little glare. A pair of her guards started forward before she raised a hand to ward them off. "Do not ride the anti-gravity beams. They are... delicately tuned. And this particular fountain is not meant to be ridden, in any case."

Dustin was halfway amused and the other half was vaguely annoyed at what Lash did. Unfortunately, Dustin's amused side won over. He turned to the wet Lash and Sakura. "Huh. I used to be young like that... Anyway, here's a towel." Faster than the eye can see, a yellow towel is produced from his bag and offers it to the two girls.
