The Sacred City

Feb 07, 2011 21:45

After the crew finished up with the Rituals of Judgement and Joining, they were permitted to enter the city proper.

Orongo was even more impressive than it appeared from outside the wall. Despite the primitive seeming architecture, the city was alive with lights and sounds and colors. The numerous stone buildings were covered in bright paints in ( Read more... )

Cargn, for his own part, was glad to be exempt from the Ritual of Joining. Both for his own sake, and for the poor soul who would have had to get married to the nigh-800 year old man.

Even so, he waited just beyond the gate, waiting for others to pass through after their rituals.

He would be off on his own soon enough, but even he was concerned enough for the mission that he wanted to make sure things went smoothly enough.

For her own part, Rhiow was glad to be off the ship for any period of time. Her eyes could relax for once, with the more sedate and settled structure of hyperstrings outside of Stacy's temporal oddness.

She trotted around the area that contained the consummation huts with her ears perked up and her whiskers twitching. So many species, so very many hormones.

Cargn she found almost by accident - or maybe luck. "The whole fiasco is pretty funny to watch, isn't it?"

"Most certainly," Cargn replied with a slight laugh, looking down at Rhiow.

"Well, at least this group seems to be enjoying themselves somewhat more than the previous crews did."

"They needed a chance to unwind," Rhiow said. "Too many crises piled on top of us lately and not enough breathing room. This is utopian in comparison."

Rhiow began grooming her tail just to have something to do while she was conversing. "What else can you tell us about our hosts? What do they value?"

"I'm sure you've guessed by now they're quite a spiritual people," Cargn replied.

"They value the opinions of those who take stock in such things as well. They are very concerned with maintaining a sort of multiversal balance, a concept ingrained within them from their long association with the Rom."

"Are the Rom or the Moai native to the planet? Or are both?"

There were other possibilities - that they had settled the planet later, or been introduced earlier, but it seemed like they knew the land well enough.

She should probably be at the first day of negotiations - but they were unlikely to notice her unless she made a stir.

A quiet thought occurred to her. "Are they likely to deny us of our request? Or should we expect long negotiations?"

"The Moai originated here, but the Rom are...wanderers. They appear to have some sort of history with the Daligig. Some sort of bad blood between the two races."

He shrugs.

"They don't speak much of it, but they seem to be rather interesting people nonetheless."

"You didn't answer my second question," Rhiow said - not accusing, no harsh tones to her voice, just pointing it out.

The Rom were wanderers - bad history with the Daligig. Rhiow filed that information away. It seemed like she would need to make a visit to the Rom shortly.

"Because I cannot say," Cargn replied evenly. "The Moai are particularly picky in regards to the Map. I believe this crew is certainly more likely than previous crews to succeed, though whether or not it is very likely at all is still to be seen."

He chuckles slightly.

"We shall see tomorrow morning, I suppose."

"We shall," Rhiow murmured. It wasn't the answer she had hoped for, but it wasn't as bad as she'd feared.

"Do the Moai have any kind of telepathy or telepathy-sensing technology?" If they didn't she could tie the Council into a mental communication spell, to better co-ordinate in the middle of negotiations.

"No," he replied. "They are...spiritually sensitive, surely. But it's more a vague sense."

Anwei paused and nodded her head to Cargn; in her mind she had tagged him as 'senior member of the crew, probably full of useful knowledge.'

"What a beautiful city! Are there any places we should make a point of seeing, sir?"

"Just exploring the city itself is the best suggestion I can offer," he replied. "However, if you happen to encounter the Rom, I suggest making it a point to visit them. It should be an enlightening experience."

"I appreciate your advice, and I will certainly look forward to seeing them. May I introduce myself? I'm Anwei Ayles," she said with a hint of a curtsy in her voice.

"Brother Cargn Thane," he said with a slight nod. "A pleasure."
