Double Header [Open Like Whoa]

It was a mutual decision that Rein and Ed would be passing customers back and forth between each other. Everyone liked clothing and people liked trinkets being made right? As thus being said, they had put up banners and a nice post with "Atelier Elric" <--- and "Stormwind Clothiers" ---> scribbled on it in fancy Crannagan script. Perfectly legible ( Read more... )

Trudy had known about the clothier on board for quite some time, but it seemed like things were constantly conspiring to give her no time to go consult with her. Finally there was some down time - training was over for the day and she had no briefings or meetings with the Captain to worry about.

"Hello, anyone home?" Trudy asked, knocking on the door frame as she let herself into the shop.

"Coming!" chirped Rein as she walked out, carrying a bunch of cloth and setting it down. "Hi welcome to my store! What can I do for you?"

"I'm hoping you'll have enough supply for a bulk order," Trudy said. "I think it would boost morale and the sense of unity in Starfighter Command if we had uniforms and squadron patches."

The stripes sewn haphazardly on the sleeves of her plantsuit testified to the need for some kind of uniform, something that would indicate rank and service in Command.

"Lemme check the inventory." Rein brought up a holographic screen and scrolled through it. "I'm guessing of a uniform color, dark green or orange depending on flight color aaaaaand..." There was a blip. "I haven't dug into that stock. As it stands, I could cover three Asura-class warships from the TSAB and have room to make myself a years supplies of panties."

Rein shrugged. "I have a lot of cloth," she said needlessly. Her back room was enormous. Lex really did his thing.

"I'd like to avoid orange if possible," Trudy said wryly. "It doesn't look very good on me. It may have tradition behind it, but the flight suits are already... well, eye-searing. Green is a good color for military uniforms, though. It's good to know you have enough stock."

The actual design of the thing was something Trudy wasn't exactly sure about. Rogue Squadron formals was one possibility, but it didn't make sense to codify a uniform for all of Command that only had a meaning for one section.

"Eye-burning orange never is," remarked Rein as she scrolled down a list of materials. "I've got some pre-set designs loaded up for people to look at. Here, look through this for a bit."

And she waved her hand as several screens appeared in front of Trudy, all displaying various designs from history and media, some of them outright archaic, the rest of them quite modern and well fitting on the models that Rein brought up.

For the record, most of the models was of the female type but there was some cross-dressing, as Rein had wasted no time in using her big sister as the model for the uniforms.

Well, she knew what she was doing. It felt good to put something so important in capable hands.

Trudy scrolled through the uniform designs, her eyebrow raising at some of the... interesting differences between male and female uniforms. Uniforms from Earth she flicked past with barely any interest. It seemed too exclusive to pick something from her home planet, no matter how obscure.

She had finally narrowed it down to just a few choices, and after a little more time deliberating, Trudy reached out and touched her final decision. "This one," she said. "In green. Medals will go on the left breast, rank stripes on the cuffs, patches on either sleeve. With, uh, pants for both sexes, please." Skirts on a military uniform? Ridiculous.

"Perfect," said Rein with a nod. "That will look nice for everyone involved." And there was a poetic irony considering that two of their previous captains had been Star Trek captains before she had arrived, or had been shortly afterwards.

"The rank stripes and the patches I can make up, though the medals we'll bring to Edward to fabricate," she said. "We're working as a tag-team now since a lot of people are asking for more complex items which require certain things I don't have."

"In short, if you can get everyone who requires one of them their measurements or send them down one by one, I will get the batch order started right away. I find it's harder to make a ballpark Small, Medium, Large or Extra Large without knowing the usual crew sizes."

Trudy nodded, pulling out her omnicomm and beginning to type out a message to Command. "I'll have the pilots come down individually to be fitted. Obviously it wouldn't work that way in an actual military outfit but... if it's not an infringement on your time, I don't see any reason why the uniforms can't fit as perfectly as possible."

She typed for a minute - apparently it was a long message. After she was finished, she put the omnicomm back in her pocket. "I'll need to get you a list of the ranks and corresponding stripes as soon as possible. We'll leave those off until we figure out what the configurations will be, I think. And I'll dig up the squadron patches that someone designed a while back so you can have those designs. Is there any way for me to see how it will look when it's finished?"

Rein nodded. "It's not really a big thing time-wise anyhow. I do a lot of things at once and I've been known to pull all nighters." She grinned, rubbing her head. "I'm a terrible workaholic at times."

"Yes, I'll just have to input the designs into the finished appearance. Let me just color swap the pallet here first..." And she tapped a few controls, swapping the red to a fashionable green with the extra bits left white. "Of course that's not the final design but there is allowances if you want to change the color of the bars and stripes and everything else. I can go lighter or darker, but a Air Force Green might be the best for this sort of thing. I can get you a sample from the back if you'd like."

"I agree with you, this shade of green seems best," Trudy said. "And I like the white as a contrast. I think the rank stripes would be best in silver."

She closed her eyes, thinking back to her lessons in Basic Training. "I think it would be best to adopt the Naval system for displaying rank in cuff stripes - one thin stripe for Ensign, two for Lieutenant, three for Commander, four for Captain. One thick stripe and three thin for General - what would be Admiral in the Navy." Trudy opened her eyes. "It also leaves room for more ranks if we need them."

Rein nodded, spinning the diagram up and zooming into the cuff, adding stripes in silver. "How's this?" she inquired, changing the format from single stripes to arrow-like slashes across the cuff.

"I think I like the striping. It seems more visible... now about these turtlenecks. They're ridiculous and impractical, they have to go. Something thin and breathable so we don't all roast while wearing them would be nice."

Never let it be said that Trudy didn't care about her pilots' comfort. She just didn't care about their comfort as much as she cared about their unification as a military outfit. "Come to think of it, these are a little dressy for duty. You said you had enough green cloth to choke a pig, right? How about the bomber jacket variant for duty uniforms, and these as dress uniforms?"

"I can work with that," said Rein. "And you're right, they are too dressy. Something like this would be used in formal events, especially in the TSAB or any other major organization I can think of."

She swapped the designs, pushing the screen to the side as she brought up another. A few flicks of her finger later and there was an bomber jacket with a more flight-like design to the overall. Rein grimaced as she got rid of the flared pants, replacing them with straight ones. "Ick no polyester," she added. "Got some of that in my stock and I refuse to use them for pants. They ride up terrible in muggy terrain."

"Definitely no polyester." Trudy liked the bomber jacket design - liked it a lot. "One more thing - or I guess two more things, but this one just struck me. What about having different colored undershirts for the squadrons and the crew of the Quarter? Patches can be hard to see from a distance. The second thing is that I'll get you the patch designs as soon as I have them."

She sucked her teeth, thinking. "Duty uniforms first, I think. It should be enough to tide them over until you're done with the dress uniforms. Now how fast can you have at least mine done and..." Trudy paused, probably dreading the figure. "What do I owe you?"

"The colored undershirts would help and it would assist in distinguishing who belongs to who," said Rein with a nod. "Could adjust the style a little..." And she widened the collar a bit to allow the shirt to show throw a bit. "There we go."

"Let's see, I'll have to prepare for it but first off, how many people are we counting? Do you have an accurate headcount?" Rein thought about the next part. "As for owing, I don't charge anything nor do I barter, I just want people to come down and wear their clothing proudly, showing off and directing others towards this place. I'm a big fan of passing on good deeds and helping newcomers when they can."

Rein grinned. "And reminding them that they don't have to wear a plantsuit all the time and wear NORMAL clothing is a good idea too."
