Devlin was in a much better state now than he'd been earlier, but he was still pale from the pain. His left shoulder had been dislocated, which Phillip had popped back into place, but it definitely needed to be stabilized. There were also finger-shaped bruises on his left forearm, but he didn't seem to notice them nearly as much as the shoulder.

"I need help," he moaned. "My shoulder."

Katara was definitely sure that she'd seen the boy before: wasn't he the one that had gotten into trouble with Negi-kun over that thing with the Riders, or whatever? In any case, she saw he was definitely still in pain. She walked over to him quickly, and started to set the shoulder: she could see he was still nursing it.

"Hold still," she warned, then brought her hand to his arm, a moment later water passing over him. With her normal healing abilities, this would take a few days, but with Negi's artifact, it would take maybe two at most.

"How do you feel?" She asked.

Devlin recognized Katara dimly through the haze of pain, and he flinched when she put her hand near him, afraid she was going to touch his shoulder. He was still tense when the water flowed over it, but he soon relaxed, and the color started to return to his face.

"Better," he said, and he was able to gently move his shoulder without too much pain. "Thanks."

"It's all right," she said, smiling. "Hey, I remember you: aren't you the boy that Hikari likes, the one that did that stupid thing with Negi? You really shouldn't be reckless like that: you could say you're lucky you're not in Negi's shoes right now. He's getting it from Asuna and his mom."

She inspected his arm, then exhaled, went into her pocket and put a card to her head.

"Abeat," she said, and she was Katara again, happily refreshed from injuries she sustained earlier.

Was that how he was going to be remembered from now on? He was okay with "the boy Hikari likes," but "kid who did that stupid thing"?

And hearing about Negi's punishment, he winced. "I have no idea how my da--Ben's going to handle it. I don't know him enough."

The Pactio card, however, he recognized, and he blinked. "You have a Pactio?" Did that stupid ermine hunt down everyone around here?

"Well hopefully whatever they're doing, its so you know not to do it again unless you're sure nothing bad will happen. You could have been permanently damaged. Just...think these kind of things through so you don't worry everyone again."

Here, she nodded. "Ys. You know how sometimes on the ship, certain people meeting each other can bring out this family vibe? Well with me, Negi is like my little brother. See, this isn't the last time that Negi has done something that could potentially hurt himself. It's true that that pervert Chamo told me about the Pactio, but I'd never have done it because he said to. It was because I wanted to protect Negi. So I made a Pactio, and it enhanced my healing abilities."

She shrugged. "I want to still watch over him a little, even when I know he's a very capable wizard. He still does things like this that remind me he's still a kid."

"Yeah," Devlin admitted reluctantly. "I don't think I'm going to go near any battles for a long time." He was just too panicky in the line of fire.

As Katara explained things, he nodded. "I want to be able to help too, but I just mess things up."

"Was it that bad?" Katara inquired. She'd been lucky: she was healed pretty quickly after her entanglement with Steve. "I mean, I got hurt too, but I know I'll have to fight more if I expect to get any better."

She smiled. "I have trouble believing that. What do you want to be able to do?"

"I freaked out," he admitted. "It's not the first time this happened, but this time I got hurt because of it. Tried to get myself free, and my shoulder..." He left it at that.

"I know I'm not strong enough yet to fight on my own," he said. "But if my friends and family are in trouble, I want to be there with them. But each time I end up in a fight, I get scared. The first real fight I was in, I was too angry to be afraid, but I was beat pretty bad." And by his psychotic biological father to boot, which didn't make any of it better.

"It;s natural to freak out when you're fighting against something string. Only people who are really confident aren't freaked out. The trick is not being afraid enough to let it conquer you. Once you're out there to fight, panic is not an option. It throws you off, makes you lose your concentration."

She put an arm to his shoulder. "Then you have to find someone who can help then. Any strength worth getting is one that you get all by yourself. We can start by thinking out what would be best for you, what plays to your strengths, and then track your progress. Have you seen Kang and Ronan at all?"

Devlin shook his head. "I've heard of Kang a little," he admitted. "Isn't he on the Council? He'd be willing to help with something like this?"

"He is, but he is also runs a training session for anyone who wants it with Ronan. I've actually learned how to adjust my martial arts more because of their training, and I'm a lot better at using defense to offset my opponent."

She nodded. "You'd have to start at the beginning because they have to evaluate, but I'm sure he'd be willing to help!"

"Sweet, definitely!" Devlin cried. "As soon as I'm completely better."

Negi had been teaching him a few basics of kung fu, and Ben had started teaching him how to use the rest of his powers. But something where he could use the full range of everything? That was definitely good to learn.

"Good," Katara said, grinning. "I'd offer my own services if I weren't so busy with the Outsiders. You know, you can always train with us too. We're trying to get other kids ready if we ever have one of these kinds of situations again."

"I might try that," Devlin agreed. "Thanks."

"No problem," Katara said. "And be more careful next time, will you?"
