Mission 01 - Recovery: Group 5

May 18, 2009 23:55

Chief, Brainiac 5, Leela, Cale, Bri, Paco, Samus, and Allen took the fifth pod. The ground beneath their feet slowly became softer and more squishy, undoubtedly to the grave annoyance of those wearing armor. Marshland, perhaps? It was definitely something they should keep an eye on. Who knew if there was quicksand or something like it, and marshes ( Read more... )

As they go through the swamp, they likely hear strange click-clacking noises. Almost like some sort of insects communicating with other insects.

Cale came to a halt as they came upon an area that seemed to be reverberating with loud, incessant, insect-like chatter. His brow creased. "What is that?" he asked, a quizzical expression on his face.

LAND-crabs! Two of them come shuffling out of the murk, immediately attacking the group. Roughly five feet tall, they were clicking their pincers threateningly and territorially.

"Never mind. Sorry I asked," Cale piped up.

Leela turns around, and out comes the scythe.

"Dammit, Cale, you didn't tell me you had crabs."

"Do they look like they're mine??" Cale shouted, barely dodging one of the pincers as one of the crabs tried to grab him.

Well, this certainly brings back memories. Though a bit shorter, the crabs were strikingly similar to Space Pirates from her very first mission. She wastes no time with the scanner and fires two shots at the land-crab reaching for Cale.

What? Even if she didn't like working in a team doesn't mean she's gonna let them go and get hurt.

The Chief opens fire with his rifle on the second crab, strafing off to one side to try to circle the crabs and possibly divide their attention. If he can distract them from the rest of the team some, excellent. It'll give them a better shot and lessen the chances of any of the unarmored members getting grabbed.

"Holy--!"

Paco ducked under a grasping pincher and swung his stick at the land-crab the pincher belonged to. It caught the piece of wood and snapped it in half like a toothpick. Paco swore and fell back, looking around for a new stick.

"Little help here?"

"I'm a little busy if you hadn't noticed!" Cale hollered back as he, too, ducked and dodged a pincer from the crab that was attacking him.

"Aim for the face!" he shouted out to Samus. It seemed to be the only place where the crabs weren't covered with in shell and Samus appeared to be the only one trying to take out the one that seemed determined to have fresh Cale for lunch.

Actually, Samus isn't the only one. Chief's making short work of the one, Samus is making short work of the other, and a chain wraps around the claw near Cale, the scythe slices off the claw near Paco, and she simultaneously kicks a decent-looking stick towards the Latino teen as she does it.

It's like a dance, moving every place she should be as she's supposed to be there.

Apparently, she's enjoying it, judging from that grin on her face.

Before long, everyone's gotten their shots in and the whole group working in tandem leads to the crabs collapsing in their hulking shells, no longer moving, sliced and diced and shot to hell.

The air smells--

Okay, actually it kinda smells pretty good, like cooked seafood.

"Holy hell. Wish we could cart some of that back to the ship. Real meat would be nice for once. Maybe find some lemongrass..."

"Infused in melted butter." Allen has hung back for the fight like the good ranged fighter he is, but he comes back now, spinning his colts once or twice before sticking them back in their holsters. "Broil that shit in cream with some sherry - little bit of worcestershire - hey, I know what I'm ordering from Cafe Du Sensorium when I get back."

"I need a freaking video camera, seriously. Think the omnicoms do that? Because someone needs to start recording these awesome fights."

Paco had moved back out of the way after grabbing his new stick, since he wasn't too into the idea of either getting pinched by giant crabs or getting shot or slashed by his teammates.

"Do you think they have friends?" he asked, looking around like he expected more crabs to come out of the forest around them.

"I'm already planning on dumping all the data out of my helmet into mine once we get back. That includes video logs," says the Chief, slamming a fresh clip home into the rifle. The things are dead, yes, but that doesn't mean anything. "You want that log, I can share." The lack of injuries is a very, very good thing. Also, this gives him a little more fighting experience with members of the crew he hasn't seen in combat before, which is also good. He'll remember it later, and put it to use.

And with that, we're back to serious business again.

"I wouldn't be surprised if there are more. Stay sharp." He starts off again, rechecking their heading on the beacon.
