Down With the Sickness [very open]

Sep 30, 2010 21:04

It was official, come down from the ship herself; there was an outbreak aboard the Transmigration 9.

Naturally, the Contagion Containment Laboratory was unusually crowded-- patients in quarantine bubbles, panicked crew members asking questions, medics and scientists hard at work in desperation to find a cure.

Meeting of the Minds notlewis October 1 2010, 03:05:46 UTC
All relevant Science and Medical staff members were ordered to attend this meeting to set things in motion towards finding a cure.

Of course, with an emergency of this capacity, anybody with useful talents was more than welcome to step up and volunteer.

Scarlet was naturally already there, sitting and leafing through her cursory observation notes while waiting for whoever else was supposed to arrive showed up.

As was Luis, though his current contribution was laying face-down on the table resting his head on his arms, teetering on the edge of his 36th hour awake.

After bringing Fletcher and Nanashi in to be quarantined, Sam came and joined Dr. Sera and Scarlet, whom he hadn't met before. He came near to the other researchers and decided to hold up the wall, crossing his arms. He was silent for a moment, as he dragged his mind away from his concerns with Nanashi being ill. "I just want to make sure something's clear right away. If Queen Nanashi has fallen victim to this, then it's very likely for me to follow suit. If I start to show even the slightest signs of it, put me in quarantine. I'm a vampire. I could easily slaughter all of you if I was put into a blood rage.

"Which brings me to my next point. Silver. If you can put me in contact with silver, then I'll only be as strong as the skinny teenager I used to be.

"With that said: Where do we go from here?"

"Amigo, if you go berserk on us, I'll be completely willing to take care of you," Luis said in a very dead sort of voice, then he lifted his head up off the table. He already looked exhausted, and just imagining how much work they had to do was making him feel even worse.

"And where do we go from here? At the moment... in circles until we can gather enough information to make any actual progress. Right now, we've got a bunch of sick people, no course of action and I've got a migraine the size of the Mediterranean."

"Certainly not at a loss for samples, at least." Ratchet arrived on the tail end of Luis' complaint, glancing at the others already gathered. "Do we have any information at all? Aside from the notion that it apparently sprang up out of the blue from within the ranks?"

Information or not, Allen has an idea. "I have nanobots in my bloodstream that are programmed as a secondary immune system. I can program them to eliminate all occurrences of the virus in a biological system, but I'll need to test them to be sure they'll preserve infected flesh without simply destroying it too. It's not a foolproof solution, but I can get started on it now. I'll have to, if it's going to do anyone any good."

"Excuse me." The team had a newcomer, straight from the pods. "Is Dr. Sera here? I was told he may need my help. I'm a doctor."

"It didn't spring up out of the blue," Luis said wearily. "It was yet another goddamned biological weapon shoved away in a closet that nobody knew about until something went horrifically wrong with it." And that's what pissed him off the most. If he'd known, they could have had a cure already tucked away somewhere just in case of this.

"Nanomachines?" Luis had never even heard of such a thing outside of horrifying science fiction novels. "... Jesus, are they even safe?" Because that was one option, but frankly the idea of tiny robots swimming around in crew members' blood freaked Luis the hell out.

"I'm Dr. Sera and I swear to god if you tell me we've had another incident separate from this one, I'm going to scream."

"James Howard. I haven't been let into the details of your situation, but they didn't give me any news to tell you." James said, arching an eyebrow.

Nanomachines and biological weapons?

"Luis Sera." Luis gave him a little half-hearted wave. "You a doctor? Come sit down. We need all the help we can get."

Almost looking out of place, Tony Tony Chopper was in the meeting from the beginning. He was terrified about everything that was going on to begin with but as the meeting had gone on, he began to focus more and more on the task before him. His fears had begun to subside.

"... I have never seen anything like this before. Has anyone done tests on samples? I can help with that if it hasn't been done yet. I've also got plenty of powerful sedatives if we need to use them."

A biological weapon stored on the ship? And it was unstable enough to start running amok like it had? Ratchet certainly shared Luis' discomfort with that particular bit of information. On the other hand... "If it was being held on the ship, then there must be documentation on it."

He looked to Allen then. "The nanobots might not be a bad idea, but are the facilities available to produce them in the numbers we'd need?" Then to Luis, "They're a perfectly viable medical tool provided that they're handled correctly."

"Dr. Samuel Henderson," Sam introduced. He reached into his lab coat pocket and produced two vials. "I pulled blood samples from the patients I brought in. One is vampiric, the other seems to come from a normal human child, as far as I'm aware." He shrugged. "It's a start. Considering the large variety of life-forms on this ship, we'll need as many different samples as possible."

Chopper nodded at Sam. "At least we have a start. Let's get more after this meeting." Looking to the others, "If we don't have the ability to make as many nanobots as we need, I'm sure Hydroponics could supply us with the ingredients we need to make medicine. I've seen many herbs and plants with medicinal properties in there and I know there's more than enough of whatever we'll need. Stacy has the equipment we need to make this sort of medicine quickly."
