With everything that had happened recently, and especially after GLaDoS and his chat with the Prince, Ratchet had been feeling... well, he supposed 'homesick' wasn't a very good word and 'lonely' just seemed too morose. Restless was probably better, so he'd made his way out to the Sensoriums. He'd been avoiding them for the most part simply because ( Read more... )

He nodded, letting her look around. The street was busy, but not packed, the walkway they were on following the curve of the building it was built against and wide enough for at least half a dozen mechs to walk shoulder to shoulder. Over the edge, the lights of the city dimmed towards the alleys; above, the number of bridges thinned considerably to allow for the air traffic, Cybertronians in airborne altmodes occasionally jetting between the buildings.

If he was being truthful, the 'was' had been something of a knee-jerk correction and didn't necessarily mean what the Ohm had done, but it was easier to shrug it off that way. Either way, his grin didn't falter despite the verbal hiccup. "That it does and these are certainly good memories. I used to come down here all the time... Maccadam's was down the street- I think the human term for it would be 'a dive'- and The Back Bumper was a couple levels lower. Used to catch the races there."

He paused, then laughed as if just realizing what he was going on about. "Ugh, I sound like some old heap waxing poetic about the past. Sorry you had to walk in on my fit of misplaced nostalgia. How have you been?" Smooth recovery, Ratchet. Real smooth.

Amazing. Absolutely amazing. It was like a super, teched up version of Osiris or Ariel and it was brilliant.

"What exactly would you be gettin' at a dive?" It was a genuine question. She didn't think he'd be eating hamburgers or rice, but one never knew what kind of fuel systems robots from alien worlds had. "What kinda races?" She had a million other questions, about what everything's made of exactly, about how it all runs and fits together, but that would all be for later.

Kaylee was quick to stop him from worrying over boring her. "No, no, s'alright. I like hearin' about it, love hearin' stories and learnin' about folks. Kind of a hobby of mine, I s'pose. But I've been alright, I think. Got caught up in some GLaDoS business for a bit there, though. How 'bout yourself?"

"Drunk for cheap, hopefully," he replied to Kaylee's first question without missing a beat, helpfully substituting the appropriate terminology. Jokes weren't any good if you had to explain them, after all. He continued, "it's all energon derivatives; I wouldn't recommend trying any of it yourself, but they had this stuff they imported from out west that was downright sublime. The races..." He gestured vaguely with a hand, trying to think of the best way to describe it to someone who wasn't familiar with how they worked- someone from Earth. "They were somewhere between track and field and stock car. Does that make sense?" Probably not...

Her mention of GLaDoS got a short laugh from Ratchet. "About the same, actually. Gotta say, that AI's got some bearings, working a person that hard for a whole lot of nothing."

A different source for the drinking, Kaylee hoped. She does laugh, first and foremost. He's quick, this one, sharp and witty. Even if there was no possibility she'd ever learn what made him tick, he was definitely worth hanging around. "So you guys probly get just as drunk as my crew, just with a energon instead of martinis. I like it." Kaylee nodded as he spoke about the races as well. "You do much in the way of races yourself, or is there another occupation rattlin' around in there someplace?"

The mechanic rolled her eyes, though she was giggling plenty still. "She's got a really bad habit of it, 'M afraid, and you never know if she's gonna keep ya for ten days or ten weeks, y'know?"

If there was a universal constant, Ratchet was convinced that it was the willingness of individuals of just about any race to abandon decorum in the name of a good time. At Kaylee's mention of his participation in the races, however, he let out an incredulous huff of air. "Please, I think a protoform on a tricycle could outrun me. I'm flattered you'd make the assumption, though." He honestly wasn't sure what he'd do with himself if he was wired the same way those racers were and he was quite happy to sit and watch it all on vidscreens instead. "No, that rattle is a medical degree I'm afraid. I just put the young hotrods back together."

He gestured for her to follow him and started walking. "You mentioned your crew the last time we talked, I think. Crew of what?" He let the irritating thoughts of GLaDoS drop, more interested in things that didn't involve her.

"I'd think you'd be a fair bit quicker than me, if it makes you feel any better," Kaylee laughed. "But a doctor? Always somethin' to be proud of. Got a doctor on my crew, does some amazin' stuff with his head and hands. Brilliant guy, Simon..."

Falling into step next to him, Kaylee realized she should probably elaborate a bit. "We run a transport ship, interplanetary. Ship's in the bay now, actually--Serenity."
